UW-Eau Claire men's golf DQ'd

The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's golf team, a perennial national power, has been disqualified from competing in the 2006 NCAA Division III national tournament because it failed to compete in the minimum number of spring matches.

UW-Eau Claire, ranked No. 5 in latest coaches' association national poll, competed in three matches during the spring season. NCAA rules stipulate teams must compete in at least four matches during the spring season to be eligible for the national tournament.

The 2006 national tournament is scheduled to be held Monday through Thursday at the Firethorn Golf Club in Lincoln, Neb.

UW-Eau Claire officials did not return phone messages Wednesday morning but on Wednesday afternoon issued a release acknowledging their mistake and apologizing to the members of the team.

UW-Eau Claire is the only school in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference to field a men's golf team. The Blugolds won the Division III national title in 2001 and have finished in the top 10 at the national tournament in six of the last seven seasons. The lone finish outside the top 10 came in 2004, when the Blugolds finished 11th.

As a fellow UWEC student there is a lull here on the campus. A lot of confusion too. Not sure at this point whether this was simply a misunderstanding or more. A women's team is very good too, along with the Softball team, both nationally ranked, so hopefully we can still have a good springs sport season.

Plain and simple, this is an AD/Coaching problem. If they didn't know they requirement, they should both be fired. As someone posted, I feel bad for the seniors.

I believe Todd Oeherlein (spell?) who was the former UWEC golf coach then got the job at UW-Madison is coming to EC in June for Badger day at Carson Park (along with several other coaches)

Heads should roll and they should ask the new UWEC women's golf coach who is experienced if he could coach the Men's golf team too.

I'd be surprised if heads didn't roll after this blunder.
