The UW-Stevens Point men won their 4th overall NCAA D-3 National Championship Saturday night, defeating Augustana (ILL) 70-54.

Combined with SPASH's High School Boys D-1 State Championship this evening, the restaurants, eateries, bistros, bars, taverns & saloons in Stevens Point should be thriving tonight! []

That's awesome-Congratulations! What is the secret to success over there in the Stevens Point area? []

Being a displaced yooper I'd have to say this is 2nd best top news in basketball today. #1 is in Michigan High School Girl's Basketball.

Only 4 classes- and yesterday in Lansing 2 of those 4 championships came from the U.P.! (Calumet and St. Ignac)

I was making breakfast & had the Rolling Stones on. Told one of the boys who the Rolling Stones were & mentioned "Mick Jagger" then remembered my 3rd/4th favorite sports site! [:-]

But congratulations to you all over there in the Stevens Point community-am happy for ya's!

Apologies I missed this! I usually check the active discussions which the pick ems push the topics aside. I couldn't remember this post- will clarify:

1. Was very happy for the UWSP program. The other big story then was in Michigan a couple of U.P. teams won state titles in girls basketball.

2. In Michigan it is much harder-they have a lot more teams and only 4 champions. They go by "Class" (A,B,C,D) not divisions. Don't remember the number of schools- will try to look it up.

3. Just saying [h]I must have been listening to singer Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones, reminded me of the poster Mick Jagger and this forum[/h]. I must not have checked in on the site in a while at the time. Actually it is one of my favorites. I feel much loyalty to up-football's site because I have tortured them by posting so much over the years!!!

4. Just congratulating UWSP again.

Hope that clarifies.

Haven't followed WIAC basketball but hope they have a good showing at the D3 level this year!

Just saw this now .... nice to be thought of, even if it's in an indirect, abstract way ![] [] []

Have to make this post quick!...Just snuck away from the endless "Honey Do" List! Ha ha

Anyways over the past few days did get caught up watching and listening to the Rolling Stones because of this thread! Some of those videos I never saw. Mick Jagger and his dance moves!

Anyways I wanted to follow through when posting I would do something. I did look at the girl's basketball tournaments for Wisconsin and Michigan.

My numbers might be off but should be in the ball park. In Wisconsin there are 5 divisions in tournament play and here are the approximate number of teams in each:

D1: 71
D2: 89
D3: 93
D4: 95
D5: 121

Michigan goes by 4 classes for basketball, so the competition looks like this:

Class A: 181
Class B: 182
Class C: 175
Class D: 157

So I get really happy for these U.P. teams when they make it all the way! Yes, some districts and regionals are harder than others, maybe the intensity of some brackets wear some teams out, I don't know.

Now for the record this wasn't meant as a slam on Wisconsin. I think very highly and have much admiration and respect for the quality of basketball here in Wisconsin. I'd say especially for girl's. For the size of the state and what they produce is incredible!

Maybe Michigan could someday add another division, I don't know if this has ever been an issue.

A side note, some years back I asked a U.P. parent whose son was playing AAU if there was a difference in the competition between Wisconsin and Michigan. First he said "No." Thought a second then added...."Oh yes, when my son drives the lane and a defender knocks him down...in Wisconsin the opponents help him up!"

Anyways hope another WIAC team can pull off some magic this March!
