Congratulations to Head Coach Pat Cerroni and his staff in leading UW Oshkosh to a 10-3 victory over John Carroll University (OH) today at J.J. Keller Field in Oshkosh.

The win gives the Titans their first ever Stagg Bowl berth in Salem, Virginia next Friday as they take on Mary Hardin Baylor (TX) who beat Mount Union (OH) 14-12 in the other semifinal. (That game was closer than I thought it would be, as I fully expected Mary Hardin Baylor to win by a couple of scores.)

Coach Cerroni has done a great job at UWO!!! Before he took over, UWO hadn't won more than four games in conference play since 1976 when they went 6-2 to win the conference championship. In Cerroni's ten years, UWO has won four or more conference games seven times, including each of the last six years, where they have gone 5-2 or better.

I couldn't be happier for Coach Cerroni!!! He is one of the "good guys" at UWO and as good a person as he is coach.

Here's hoping for another Titan win next Friday!!!

This is the first time since 2004 (Linfield defeated Mary Hardin-Baylor) that either Mount Union or UW-Whitewater will not be in the Stagg Bowl. Also it's the first time since 1999 (Pacific Lutheran defeated Rowan) that no conference champions (Both teams got in as at-large (UMHB's league lost their AQ bid since they did not have enough NCAA Eligible teams)) are in the Stagg Bowl as well.

That wouldn't be accurate.....

Mary Hardin Baylor won the American South Conference with a 6-0 record. While winning the ASC didn't give Mary Hardin Baylor the automatic Pool A bid, they did win their conference.

Now had Mount Union beaten Mary Hardin Baylor yesterday, the Stagg Bowl would have seen a pair of conference runner-ups playing for the National Championship.

As an early 1990's grad of UW-O, this run to the Stagg Bowl makes me keep thinking of one of the songs from Hamilton, "and the world turned upside down." (Don't need a history lesson, know of the original 18th Century song.) But it is such a far cry from where we were when I was there. Occasionally we'd be decent, but never anything like this.

Yes they did win their conference but technically they were not a Pool A team. This matchup has become a rare occurrence in DIII with UWW and Mount Union dominating for so long.

At the half it is:

Mary Hardin-Baylor 10
UW-Oshkosh 7

UMHB got an INT late in the second quarter to end a promising Titan drive well in Crusader territory.

Does Oshkosh usually play this conservative on offense? It just seems like the play-calling is real vanilla. You have to mix it up a little more than what they are doing at the moment.

I bet Cerroni kicks the FG when they were inside the 30 in the first half if he has to make that decision again. That left me scratching my head, maybe the kicker sucks though.

Well, looked what happened last night when they decided to be more aggressive...... A pair of INT's.

When you have a defense as solid as what UWO had this year, odds are pretty good that you will win as long as you don't turn it over yourself. Unfortunately for UWO, the UMHB front seven didn't allow them to have their usual success running the ball and the offense became pretty one dimensional last night.

If you would have said before the game that UWO would march down the field for a TD on their first possession and give up just ten points, I would have been pretty confident that the Walnut and Bronze would be flying back to Wisconsin today.

The kicker was 16/22 on the season with a long of 50, so I would hardly say that "the kicker sucks."

And I would bet you are wrong.... Cerroni is the type that doesn't second guess his decisions like choosing to forego attempting a 42 yard FG.

I didn't say he sucked, relax. And you are wrong if you think Cerroni hasn't thought about not taking that fg attempt since the game ended.

Look at the situations where the picks were thrown though. The last one he had to try and throw it to the sticks, MHB just was solid on the play. The other one was trying to make a play right before the half. I was talking more along the lines of run, run, pass nearly every possession it felt like. You have to try and switch it up a little bit against a defense of that quality. This was a game that easily could have been won.

Great season by UW-Oshkosh. Hats off to Coach Cerroni & staff. Great story for them to take the program to these heights over the last few years. Impressive.

MHB's QB was the difference, and in Championship games, all other things being equal, the team with a standout player like him is often going to have the edge. Take nothing away from the Titans, they just could never make the break they needed for themselves. Fantastic game, two great D3 teams.

When you say "maybe the kicker sucks though" it sure sounds like you are implying it....

Anyway, as far as the fourth down decision, you have your opinion, I have mine....

Let's just say if a guy is going to second guess things, he isn't going to leave the defensive calls in the hands of the players like Cerroni has done this season.... My comment has more to do with the fact that I believe Cerroni isn't the type to second guess things in general. That's just not his make-up.
