Goals: United States - Aaron Long (41', 90'), Gyasi Zardes (66', 69'), Christian Pulisic (73'), Paul Arriola (78')

The U.S. controlled throughout, but still had some nervy moments before busting the match open with four goals in 12 minutes in the second half.

Don't wanna read a ton into it as T&T are very poor at the minute but it's nice to see the system works at least against subpar competition.

Also nice to see a certain American player run around the pitch looking like the $75 million player Chelsea thinks he is.

Also, on a bit of a crazy note, Here's a good one from legendary stat man Paul Carr.

Aaron Long is the first U.S. defender with two goals in a game. Ever.

(Definitely in the modern era. And EVER, assuming lineups in the USMNT media guide are positionally accurate before the 1980s.)

In the other Group D match, Panama won a fun one over Guyana, 4-2, to book a place in the quarterfinals alongside the U.S. Trinidad & Tobago and Guyana are eliminated.

Group A saw Mexico take all nine points with a closer-than-they-wanted 3-2 win over Martinique, while Canada nabbed second place with an easy 7-0 win over a defection-ridden Cuba squad.

Big surprise in Group B as Haiti knocks off Costa Rica, 2-1, to claim top spot in the group, forcing Costa Rica into a quarterfinal matchup with Mexico, while Haiti squares off against Canada.

Bermuda won in the other match, 2-0, over Nicaragua for their first Gold Cup victory.

Group C action saw Curacao grabing a late equalizer to draw Jamaica, 1-1, and that would turn out to be greatly important after Honduras smashed El Salvador, 4-0, giving Curacao second place in the group and a spot in the quarterfinals.

----

In group D, Trinidad and Guyana played out a 1-1 draw with both teams already eliminated.

United States 1
Panama 0

Goal: United States - Jozy Altidore (66')

With both teams through, each team made wholesale lineup changes which led to a disjointed affair. The U.S. were the better side and deserved the three points, which they got after Altidore scored a bicycle kick off a mis-headed poorly-cleared set-piece.

Quarterfinals:

Haiti 3
Canada 2

New coach. Promising young talent. But Canada still gonna Canada, blowing a 2-0 lead and bowing out in the quarters. Their matchups in the fall with the U.S. in the CONCACAF Nations League should be fun.

Mexico 1
Costa Rica 1

Mexico wins on PKs, 5-4

El Tri again underperforms and has to have their bacon saved by GK Memo Ochoa.

Quarterfinals:

Jamaica 1
Panama 0

Jamaica was the worse side, but got a PK on a handball in the 75th minute and converted it to advance to the semis.

United States 1
Curacao 0

Goal: United States - Weston McKennie (25')

The U.S. was alright for the first 25 minutes and capped that with a headed goal from Weston McKennie off a beautiful cross from Christian Pulisic. The next 65 minutes saw Curacao assert themselves in the match and eventually take control, with only the American defense and a full-extension 85th minute save from Zack Steffen to keep them off the scoresheet.

A very underwhelming USMNT performance to say the least. Not exactly headed into the semis on a great note.

Semifinals:

Mexico 1
Haiti 0

Mexico had the dominant run of play but only scored on a PK in extra time, ending the Haitians nice tourney run in somewhat cruel fashion.

Semifinals:

United States 3
Jamaica 1

Goals: United States - Weston McKennie (9'); Christian Pulisic (52', 87'); Jamaica - Shamar Nicholson (69')

After a dominating first 15 minutes, the U.S. were forced to regroup after a 90-minute weather delay. Dodged a few bullets, but overall a far more cohesive performance than their last two matches.

Final:

Mexico 1
United States 0

Goal: Mexico - Jonathan dos Santos (73')

The U.S. played well in the first half but missed several golden opportunities to score. Mexico asserted themselves in the second half and outside of a Jordan Morris header off a corner that was barely cleared off the line, the U.S. struggled to threaten and was ultimately broken in the 73rd minute by a nice combo play sequence from Mexico.

A bit of a mixed bag tourney from the U.S. I think it's trending in a better direction, but depth is still lacking and wrong roster choices are being made. The September friendlies and the Nations League in the fall will be another key step...will it be a step forward though?
