In a punishment without precedent, Russia’s Olympic team has been barred from the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea. The nation was guilty of executing an extensive state-backed doping program.

Russians can still go, but they wont be going under a 'Russian' flag.

Yep, the process of who can and can't go will be fun to watch. Also, the whole KHL (who has threatened to not let clubs release players if Russia was banned) conundrum, as that league was to provide a large chunk of the hockey players with the NHL not sending their guys.

There was always the chance the IOC might kowtow, but this is about the punishment I expected to come out. Russia had their ban extended another two years by the IAAF (track & field's governing body) a few months back, so it was hard to see Bach and Co. not laying down some sort of law.

Of Russia's 33 medals won at Sochi, 11 have already been relinquished due to doping, with another handful likely to follow suit.

If you have some time, check out the McLaren Report or Dr. Rodchnekov's affidavit...fascinating, but not shocking that this crap is still happening.

Tidbits from Rodchenkov's IOC affidavit:

Sochi doping scam was paid for by £700k in 'research grants' from sports ministry, coach Viktor Chegin accidentally doped race walker Lashmanova with GW1516 & tried to bribe Rodchenkov to cover it up.

Brooklyn Nets owner & Russian biathlon chief Mikhail Prokhorov paid 'millions of rubles' in hush money to athlete who threatened to blow whistle on EPO use, dept sports minister Nagornykh asked him to spike Ukraine's sledders in Sochi (GR refused)...Rodchenkov refused to let men's ice hockey team in on his 3-steroid 'Duchess' cocktail he was worried they'd do it wrong while playing in the NHL and the Americans would detect it.

Also, the Netflix documentary "Icarus" takes a deep dive into this stuff and features Dr. Rodchnekov prominently.

Reports are surfacing that we have our first failed "Olympic Athlete from Russia" drug test from Pyeongchang. Russian media has identified bronze medal winning mixed doubles curler Alexander Krushelnitskiy as having tested positive for meldonium.

Curling! 🙄

Just a joke that they're even there in the first place. Gee, such a punishment that they have to accept a gold medal as the "Olympic Athletes from Russia" instead of just "Russia."

FIFA: "We are the most corrupt sports organization in the world."
IOC: "Hold my beer."

Unfortunately, Russia is one of those protected countries in the IOC. Had this been South Africa, I think things would have been handled differently. Probably also doesn't help that the CAS is there to undermine any decision they make.

His B sample was positive as well, and is now claiming his drink was spiked in a pre-Olympic camp in Japan. Meanwhile, Russians are burning Rodchenkov in effigy. That culture will never change over there. Paranoia rules the roost...and it's spreading here as well.
