The badgers have a great opportunity to get back on track to the big 10 championship game today, and I do think they’ll come out and play well and beat Iowa.

What I think will work to their benefit is that by kickoff, Minnesota, after having played the longest preseason schedule in college football history, will have already lost their first regular season game of the year, which will put Wisconsin back in the driver’s seat of the big 10 west, and should really energize the home crowd.

I don't like it, but they're a good Big 10 team, dude. Not sure how good the league is beyond OSU but they at least got that going for them.

Meanwhile the Badgers look ticketed for maybe 1 or 2 more wins this year.

The Badgers might squeak out more as it wasn't a perfect effort but playing against your mirror image allows to you to do dumb, conservative stuff because they will as well.

24-22 over Iowa. Badgers D stonewalls Stanley at the 1 on a two-point conversion after conceding a 75-yard bomb following a Bucky FG. Badgers, behind Taylor were fortunately able to run out the clock after that.

#18 Iowa (6-3, 3-3)  22

Final Score

Without stretching one's imagination too much, this could easily have been a 31-16 or 38-16 Wisconsin victory, with a bit more focus, execution & attention to detail by the Badgers.

Statistically, Wisconsin dominated this game.  Bucky outgained Iowa 473 total yards to Iowa's 295.  Bear in mind:  1. Iowa picked up 75 of its total yards late in the 4th qtr on a bust by a Badger cornerback resulting in a TD for the Hawkeyes.  2. Twice, the Badgers ventured inside Iowa's 15-yard line following long drives and came away with nothing ... in the 1st half, a UW drive to the  Iowa 13-yard line resulted in a missed field goal, and, late in the 4th qtr, Bucky took a knee at the Hawkeye 13-yard line to run out the clock and end the game.

1st Downs:  UW-24 ... IA-15
Rushing Yards:  UW-300 ... IA-87
Passing Yards:  UW-173 ... IA-208
Total Yards:  UW-473 ...  IA-295
3rd Downs:  UW-8 of 14 ... IA-1 of 9
Time of Possession:  UW-37:24 ... IA-22:36

Kind of a sloppy win for the badgers, but they did close it out and Taylor was able to bounce back with s nice performance.

As for Minnesota, congrats to them on the win yesterday in a big game...but I’m still not buying them. When nearly every one of their games has come against back up QBs and they’ve had to scrape by power house teams like Georgia Southern, South Dakota st, and Fresno St, it’s hard to put much stock in them. They could just as easily be 6-3 right now with a brutally weak schedule. Penn state did not play well with brutal red zone turnovers. I think Penn State thought they’d just walk in and beat Minnesota without a fight (see Wisconsin vs. Illinois). I wouldn’t be surprised if Iowa ends up beating Minnesota next week.

And even if Minnesota does come into the Wisconsin game at 11-0 with the big ten west locked up, I still believe Wisconsin comes away with the win and brings the axe back to Madison. Plus, under that scenario Wisconsin may end up getting a better bowl bid by ending the year with only 2 losses (rather than a 3rd to OSU).

I expect Iowa will beat Minnesota next week and if the Badgers take care of business, play the Gophers for a chance to get to Indy.  This is kind of an odd thing to say, but I kind of hope the Goffers win next week and really that last game ends meaningless.  I agree with you Rise that I don't want to see Ohio St. again and end with another blowout. I don't see the Rose Bowl taking a 3 loss Badger team against Oregon.  Or even the Orange.   If they end the season with 2 losses and end the regular season beating a highly ranked Minnesota team, the bowl game will be a New Years bowl.  Either the Citrus or Outback.  Or, if both the Badgers and Penn St. end the season 10-2, the Cotton Bowl could take either of them.

As far as yesterday goes, it was ugly for me.  Both teams still live in the Alvarez-Fry age and that leads to a yawner.  But, a win is a win and at this point, the Badgers badly needed one.  I was amazed Iowa didn't seem to adjust to the Badger run game and continued to let Taylor and Watson pick up chunks.  Stubborn is as stubborn does.

The kicking game has to be addressed.  I can't believe they have let Lotti continue to punt.  He is just not good and never changes the field.  I know punter is not a high priority in recruiting, but go find one somewhere.  And can't Hintze kick?  Wasn't Blake Wilcox rated a 5 star kicker??  Maybe he is a redshirt option, but special teams - kicking wise - is a real weakness for this team.

An interesting side note:

I tweeted yesterday that "I steadfastly refuse to believe Zach Hintze is solely a kickoff specialist." The tweet got likes from a female relative of Hintze's and Hintze (minutes after the game ended) himself...with the female relative commenting "In a game where every point counts #LetHintzeKick #39"...

...so apparently #39 has the belief in himself that he would be an improvement. And then there's Wilcox too. Hate to jump on a state kid but Larsh has Kyle French's disease where he struggles with consistency when it comes to striking the football.

I also tweeted out about Connor Allen not being just a holder (lol), but his stats as a punter are comparable to Lotti's. Might be time to consider rugby punting. 35 yard punts at the FBS level are unacceptable.
