One week after having assault charges against her dropped, Hope Solo and her husband, ex-footballer Jerramy Stevens, were stopped in their vehicle for erratic driving. Stevens was charged with DUI, while police report Solo became so belligerent during Stevens' arrest (think Reese Witherspoon) that she was a step away from a disorderly conduct charge herself.

Police report the couple played the "don't you know who we are" card.

Correction Mick, they were pulled over while driving a US Soccer owned vehicle.

The first report out did specify they were in THEIR vehicle.
That has been rectified since the first report.

Also, I believe initial reports that Stevens was charged with DUI and pot possession were not accurate. I believe Stevens was only charged with DIU.

I think Solo and Stevens are both alcoholics. Perhaps 'functional' alcoholics, but alcoholics non the less.
Add in the weed and you have a potent combo. No surprise they tend to exhibit odd and bizarre behavior.
Add 2 alcoholics together and you have a potent mix for trouble.
She was enough of a problem on her own, once she hooked up with Stevens; it made for a train wreck in waiting.
I don't know her family situation, but it appears she had little 'family' around her that was helping her.

Her dad was a sometimes homeless, unstable Vietnam vet...you hate to start harkening back to "daddy issues," but there's a lot of trailer park mentality in that family.

I would have thought being in the 'Olympic family' would have helped her structure her life.
I know that is expecting a lot. The thing is Solo in now in her 30's. Time to take control of
one's life. Most of us with poor family backgrounds did that in our 20's or earlier.
I do have 'some' sympathy, but is waning with her lack of taking personal control and responsibility.

One would think, but it's clear she feels more comfortable being the odd duck who rails against the establishment.

The U.S. Women's Soccer structure is very much built on "ponytailed princesses." Solo is everything but that (hence my comparison to Tonya Harding). She's still bitter from being (wrongly) yanked from the lineup on the eve of the 2007 WC semifinal in favor of a '99er in Briana Scurry (the U.S. lost 4-0, after dominating in their previous tourney games), and uses every opportunity to speak out against the level of reverence given to that generation of players.

Solo comes off as rough and indignant, and U.S. Soccer's attempts to sell her like the rest of the team as sports role models to precocious young girls has come off as awkward and hollow for years.

Once her suspension ends, the USSF needs to take a long look at moving on from their long-time goalie. It's not as if there isn't 3-4 capable ladies waiting in the wings.

You hope she straightens out her personal life, but the reality is, Hope Solo will always be a difficult personality to corral.

The USSF has reportedly set forth some conditions & criteria which Hope Solo must meet before her 30-day suspension is lifted, including receiving alcohol couseling. She had been ordered to refrain from alcohol use in June, 2014. However, it appears she may not be adhering that order.

I like the Tonya Harding parallel, DB. And, I think your insights Squeeze may be very close to spot on.

That's all probably for the best. Solo has a sweet side to her at times (I wonder if she's bi-polar?) and is an incredibly talented player who would be useful going forward, but you just don't need the distraction she's currently providing.

The U.S. Women's team is a bizarre soap opera right now with veteran players dictating a lot of what is going on and a tactically-deficient Federation yes-woman at coach.

They've wasted so much developmental time since the Olympics in 2012 kow-towing to the veterans (such as firing a coach who had the audacity to bring in younger players and try different formations/tactics) that it's hard to see them getting their act together and not bombing out at the WWC in 2015....which is absurd considering their individual talent level across the board is still unparalleled in women's soccer.

Following a superbly tactical, 4-3 shoot-out victory by Sweden over the U.S. Women's Soccer Team, eliminating the Americans from the 2016 Olympics, U.S. goalie Hope Solo criticized the Swedes for being "cowards."

It's not like Solo has ever been known to be gracious in defeat. Heck, she's not been gracious when asked to sit in favor of someone else (see: World Cup, 2007). That said, does this suddenly get her booted off the USWNT? I doubt this will be "the final straw," the fact that she's 35 now and will be 38 when the next World Cup rolls around probably influences that decision more. If anything, I expected that Rio would be her last hurrah (and maybe the last hurrah for a couple others) and then the USWNT spends the next 3 years working on revamping the squad to do some long-overdue player development.
I'm not saying some things the WIAA does are wrong, ... I'm just saying, "I find it weird."
