Former Marshfield High School & Creighton University standout and current Columbus Crew star Ethan Finlay made his USA National Soccer Team debut on Sunday in the USA's 3-2 win over Iceland.

Ha, I was wondering if you were gonna post about this, Mick!

Finlay did alright for a debutante...a mix of good and bad, didn't seem afraid to take on defenders, which is something the USMNT is currently lacking.

Anyone know how many Wisconsin prep players have made their way onto the men's and women's senior national teams over the years?

I can think of:

Leslie Osborne (CMH)
Jimmy Banks (Milwaukee Custer)
Jesse Marsch (Racine Case)
Jay DeMerit (Bay Port)
Sarah Hagen (Appleton North)
Casey Nogueira (played frosh year at Cedarburg)
Ethan Finlay (Marshfield)

I just found out earlier this evening that my ever-volatile (at least when he was in high school) homie made his national team debut on the pitch.

I haven't seen a lot of girls high school soccer. However, the best female soccer player I ever saw play in person was Appleton North's Sarah Hagen, both in high school and in U-19 competition in the Midwest Regional. Hagen was a certifiable assassin.

Finlay didn't sub in until the 87th minute tonight against Canada, but a minute after coming on he produced a picture-perfect cross (Vine below) that Jozy Altidore headed home for the game-winner.

Ah yes, our most attractive soccer export. Remember her winning state with GBND in basketball many moons ago.

I believe she was born in Marshfield.

Yes she was. I am good friends with her and her entire family. We have known each other since we were in diapers. She grew up on the other side of the street of me.

After impressing in the January camp, Finlay was named to the preliminary roster for the upcoming home-and-home World Cup qualifiers against Guatemala.

Throw him into the starting XI. It's not like we could look much worse than we did Friday night. (Note: I was expecting USA 1-2 Guatemala, so 0-2 didn't surprise me at all. Disappoint, yeah - but sadly, I expected us to come out and lay an egg. It's what we've done for most of the last 18 months.) Of course, given recent lineups Klinsmann would just throw him out into some unfamiliar position and waste his skill.
I'm not saying some things the WIAA does are wrong, ... I'm just saying, "I find it weird."

Sounds like Bedoya may be out (not the worst thing, he's a CAM, not the winger our German genius seems to think he is), so Finlay would be a good choice on the wing. Of course, the baker's boy from Botnang will probably start him at fullback....[]

For those not in the know, a loss to Guatemala on Tuesday ostensibly makes WC qualification for the U.S. a ridiculously tall task. A draw is breathing room, a win takes people farther away from the ledge. It's all embarrassing nonetheless.

Late to the party, but Finlay came on as a sub in the 4-0 win over Guatemala, and wrongly had a goal disallowed on an egregious offside call.

No surprise, but Finlay is included on the USMNT's 40-man preliminary Copa America roster:
