The Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau Red Hawks and 1st-year head coach Louis Hurd are State-bound for the first time in program history after they defeated the Hayward Hurricanes in the Sectional Final, the same program they lost to just 3 years ago in the Sectional Final as well. They've maintained their focus for the past couple games after almost losing to Elk Mound in the Regional Final. They've received the 4-seed being behind other great teams. Other D3 teams at state include 1-seed Marshall, 2-seed Laconia, and 3-seed Freedom.

D3 State Teams:
1. Marshall (24-2) - Losses include Aquinas by 9 and Stevens Point by 4. Notable wins include Monroe by 13, Martin Luther by 15 and Shoreland Lutheran by 21. They played a very diverse schedule of teams from D2 through D4. They average 65 points per game while allowing 42 points per contest.
2. Laconia (26-0) - Notable wins include Amherst by 8 in OT, Valders by 12, Waupun by 17, and MSOL by 18. They've played D3 and D4 teams. They average 60 points per and allow 35 points per.
3. Freedom (23-3) - Losses include Appleton East by 5, Luxemburg-Casco by 13, and Wrightstown by 25. Notable wins include Luxemburg-Casco by 17, Wrightstown by 20 and 13, and New London by 29. The Irish have played D3 and D2 games with 1 D1 game. They average 59 points per and allow 37 points per.
4. Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau (24-2) - Losses include Melrose-Mindoro by 5 and Arcadia by 3. Notable wins include Bloomer by 14, Prescott by 9, Onalaska by 18, and Hayward by 25. Their schedule was pretty good with teams from D5 to D2. G-E-T averages 58 points per and allows 35 points per contest.

Thursday, March 7 State Semfinal:
4. G-E-T vs. 1. Marshall @ 1:35 pm - The Red Hawks face the reining D3 State champs being the Cardinals of Marshall in the first round. This is definitely the toughest game for G-E-T while Marshall has been in these situations before with a very tough schedule. Seedings don't matter in the state tournament, and I think the final score will be very tight.
3. Freedom vs. 2. Laconia @ 3:15 pm - The Irish from Freedom ended the season with two losses in their final 7 games after 14 straight wins. They face undefeated Laconia, who arrived to State after being upset last season in Sectionals. Again, seeding at state doesn't mean anything, so this game should be close throughout the entire contest.

Saturday, March 9 State Championship:
2. Laconia/3. Freedom vs. 1. Marshall/4. G-E-T - I think we will probably see a 1 vs. 2 match-up in the championship game, but upsets in the previous round are very possible. The two favorites to win - reining champions from Marshall and undefeated Laconia - will play a very exciting game from two teams with pretty much complete games. I'm not sure who will come out victorious.

My Predictions:
4. G-E-T vs. 1. Marshall
3. Freedom vs. 2. Laconia

2. Laconia vs. 1. Marshall

State Semifinal Scores:
G-E-T 37, Marshall 58 - G-E-T was down just 5 points at the half before Marshall’s defense jumped every pass and contested every shot very well. The Marshall Cardinals win move on to play their final game of the season on Saturday. The Red Hawks’ end their historic season with a 24-3 record.
Freedom 53, Laconia 67 - Just like the G-E-T vs. Marshall game, the halftime score was very close until Laconia took off in the second half. Laconia will play Marshall on Saturday for a chance at the gold ball.

I saw Marshall get beat by Aquinas, I also saw GET play. Marshall wore out in the second half against Aquinas. I wonder if the same happened to GET?

Lexi Wagner played all but the last couple minutes, and she was definitely getting tired. As for the rest of them, I think Marshall's defense did a good job crowding the ball and the passing lanes, forcing GET to drive and work for passes. They also missed easy baskets in close range that really didn't help.
