There are a lot of good games this week, especially on Monday. Mauston @ West Salem will be a great playoff preview and sets up a likely rematch between the two teams for the regional semifinal. PdC, although not in section 1, is a good section 3 team that will help prepare Westby. Stratford got the 1 seed in section 1 and travel to G-E-T, who got the 5 seed. This also sets up a potential rematch in the regional final game if G-E-T upsets Westby in the semifinal.

Current Standings:
Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau: 11-9; 8-3
Westby: 14-5; 8-3
Luther: 11-9; 7-3
West Salem: 9-11; 7-4
Viroqua: 6-13; 4-6
Black River Falls: 4-16; 2-9
Arcadia: 4-14; 1-9

Monday, February 18:
BRF @ Tomah - BRF recently played a very good game against Bangor and held a 1-point lead at the half before losing by 5. This came right after losing a tough game to Arcadia, giving them their first conference win. Although I don’t think BRF will win, I think they will take Tomah down to a close game.
Luther @ Arcadia - Arcadia just got their first conference win of the year, but I don’t think they will be able to beat Luther. I don’t see them being able to stop the size that the Knights have.
Mauston @ West Salem - This is a very good game considering it will likely be a preview of a game that will happen in the regional semifinals. Mauston has had times where they have struggled, but they have been doing better since a win over the Dells. I think West Salem will keep it a very close game, however, and possibly even beat them.
PdC @ Westby - PdC is another good team that plays in section 3 of D3. Westby, like a lot of Coulee teams, has lost some games they could have won, and this is another winnable one, but it will take a great game by the Norsemen.
Stratford @ G-E-T - This is a very interesting match-up. Stratford is undefeated, but they haven’t played as difficult of a schedule as G-E-T. I don’t think that will matter, but this will be a test for both teams to see how ready they are for the playoffs.

Tuesday, February 19:
West Salem @ Viroqua - Luther recently played a close game with Viroqua. The Blackhawks are desperate for wins before the playoffs, but I’m not sure West Salem can afford to lose another game. They have a very outside chance at sharing the conference title and need Arcadia to beat both Luther and G-E-T and for Luther to beat Westby, forcing a four-way tie for first. The chance of this happening is very small but still possible.

Thursday, February 21:
G-E-T @ Arcadia - An upset here is quite possible if G-E-T overlooks this team. Arcadia can play well as times but struggle to play complete games. G-E-T depends on the second-half to determine games. If they play well, the likely win not only that game but the next. If they don’t play well in the second half, they likely lose and/or lose the next.
Viroqua @ BRF - This is another interesting match. Viroqua beat BRF at the Coulee Classic while Bird was still suspended for four games. BRF has improved a lot since he has returned, so this should be a very interesting game.
Westby @ Luther - This is probably the biggest game of the week. Both teams have 3 conference losses, and the winner likely shares first with G-E-T while the loser likely shares second with West Salem. This is a big one for both teams.

Saturday, February 23:
Viroqua @ Richland Center - Richland Center has struggled all season. The Hornets also struggled getting in practices and games because of the crazy weather. At this point they should be good. Viroqua is looking for more wins before the post season, and this can be a good one just a couple days before the playoffs start.

My Predictions:
BRF @ Tomah
Luther @ Arcadia
Mauston @ West Salem
PdC @ Westby
Stratford @ G-E-T

West Salem @ Viroqua

G-E-T @ Arcadia
Viroqua @ BRF
Westby @ Luther

Viroqua @ RC

Games of the Week:
Mauston @ West Salem
PdC @ Westby
Stratford @ G-E-T
Westby @ Luther
All of these games are huge in terms of playoffs or conference positioning. The seeds are already decided, but they don’t matter yet as there is still one more week (arguably the most important week of the regular season) before the playoffs. In conference play, Westby @ Luther is huge because the winner likely ties with G-E-T for first assuming the beat Arcadia, and the loser likely ties with West Salem for second assuming they beat Viroqua. The other games are great for preparing for the playoffs.

Monday and Tuesday Scores:
BRF 49, Tomah 59
Luther 60, Arcadia 39
Mauston 72, West Salem 68 - West Salem was able to keep it close with 3 seed Mauston. Assuming 6 seed West Salem isn’t upset by 10 seed Arcadia on Tuesday, there should be a rematch between these teams at Mauston.
PdC 65, Westby 71 - Although PdC isn’t in the same playoff sectional, this game showed that Westby can battle with some of the top teams in the area. They proved they are the team to beat right now, but they have a very tough playoff schedule ahead of them as the 4 seed.
Stratford 61, G-E-T 48 - G-E-T got out to a 27-25 lead at the half after a great defense by the Redhawks with a little help coming from Stratford making about 1 of 7 from the line. In the second half, Stratford got a quick lead off of a 4-0 run and came back. They improved their free throw shooting and was able to get a lot of momentum from crafty in-bounds plays. If 5 seed G-E-T can beat 12 seed Nekoosa and upset 4 seed Westby, there will likely be a rematch at Stratford a week from Saturday for the regional final. G-E-T’s streak as regional champs is in jeparody this year as they travel to Westby and possibly to Stratford on back-to-back days.

West Salem 75, Viroqua 65 - Not a bad win for West Salem. It seems they are struggling at times to find a rhythm, and they will probably find it back before the playoffs. Traveling to Viroqua is always tough, just ask the Red Hawks 😉

The race for conference championships is coming to an end. There are three teams in position to gain at least a share with an 8-3 record. G-E-T, Luther, and Westby all are tied, and Luther and Westby play on Thursday. The winner is guaranteed at least a share of the conference. G-E-T can also gain a share with a win over Arcadia, who sits at the bottom of the standings. The only possible way an outright champion can be declared is if G-E-T happens to lose to Arcadia, which is very possible if G-E-T can’t hit their 3’s, which is what their offense revolves around.

Thursday Scores:
G-E-T 63, Arcadia 37 - G-E-T held a lead for pretty much the entire game. Jacob Jumbeck had a huge first half with 17 points with 5 3's. A good win to wrap up the season for the Red Hawks before the playoffs as they host 12 seed Nekoosa on Tuesday.
Viroqua 62, BRF 42 - Viroqua got a big win tonight. They finish at 5th in conference, just above Arcadia and BRF. This is a team that could sneak a couple of upsets as a 9 seed as they aren't expected to come out of the first round.
Westby 48, Luther 62 - Luther came out to a 40-16 lead at the half with 17 points from Bennett Loersch. Westby had some good momentum during the second half, but it wasn't enough to stop Luther's inside game. Give Luther a lot of credit, Westby seemed like the team to beat in the Coulee and they rose well to the occasion. The Knights play in D4, and they were given a 7 seed in a very tough sectional. Unfortunately this game didn't come earlier, or they could have argued for possibly a top 5 seed. They can also make a lot of noise as a 7 seed that is only expected to win a single game.

Congratulations to the Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau Red Hawks and the Onalaska Luther Knights as they are your Coulee Conference Champions with a 9-3 record each! West Salem and Westby are tied for 3rd with an 8-4 record.

There is only one game on Saturday which has Viroqua traveling to Richland Center.
