If anyone's got interest in these tournaments...we can talk about them here.

Anywho, the CAC kicked off yesterday with the U.S. unsurprisingly falling to 3rd-ranked Colombia, 2-0. Thought the U.S. played alright in the first half, but this is another game where it becomes clear that top-end talent is lacking in this country.

Would like to see Nagbe in the starting 111 going forward. Not all is lost, as results against Costa Rica and Paraguay are definitely not out of the question, but this team must seize any opportunities given to them, and avoid letdowns like bad turnovers from MB90, Cameron's poor CK marking and Yedlin giving up a careless handball PK.

In other Group A action, Costa Rica and Paraguay played to a scoreless draw and CRC CB Kendall Waston was sent off late.

That's pretty much all the U.S. could have hoped for out of that game.

Group B:

Peru 1, Haiti 0 - Paolo Guerrero became Peru's all-time leading scorer with a beautiful diving header in the 60th minute.

Brazil 0, Ecuador 0 - A lot of end-to-end action, but very few legitimate scoring chances. Ecuador appeared to score a goal when Brazil's GK flubbed a cross into his own net, but the play was blown dead just before that when it was ruled the ball went completely over the end-line before the Ecuadorian played crossed the ball. Replays appeared to show otherwise.

Group C:

Venezuela 1, Jamaica 0 - Josef Martinez's early goal stood up, as Jamaica couldn't overcome Rodolph Austin's early red card.

Mexico 3, Uruguay 1 - In front of heavily pro-Mexico crowd, El Tri showed itself to be a serious contender with two late goals to answer Uruguay's 74th minute equalizer.

My view on the group stages:

-- Group A: U.S. should make it out ... which means it's at least 50/50 they'll piss it away to Costa Rica - perhaps as early as Tuesday night. Colombia should win the group. I'll be shocked if Paraguay does much.
-- Group B: Brazil probably finds a way to win the group, but it says nothing about the quality of the team. (Low.) Ecuador should go through as the other team. Peru will need to overachieve to advance; Haiti will do good to score. (Watch it happen against Brazil.)
-- Group C: Mexico beating Uruguay means the group title is theirs to lose. Even with a 3-1 loss, Uruguay should get out. If it doesn't, then Venezuela would be the team to go through - and that would be a major feat.
-- Group D: Argentina, Chile, ... Chile, Argentina. We figure out who wins the group tomorrow night.
I'm not saying some things the WIAA does are wrong, ... I'm just saying, "I find it weird."

You almost have to figure Mexico as a heavy favorite to win this thing. Fantastic form, and "home" advantage.

Brazil brought a B squad and quite frankly, their A-level talent isn't all that great these days.

Argentina and Chile would be the other heavy favorites, with Colombia as a darkhorse (I don't think they're as great a side as most seem to believe)...Messi's injury might keep him out of the matchup against Chile, but they should be able to get by Bolivia/Panama no problem, so the Chile match is only for placement, as you said.

Group D:

Panama 2, Bolivia 1 - A Blas Perez brace surrounded him spending half the game on the ground (as usual), and kept Panama's sliver of hope of advancing alive.

Argentina 2, Chile 1 - Messi sat, Aguero came off the bench and Argentina still dominated the current CA holders who have yet to find form since a coaching change in January. Chile grabbed a consolation goal at the death to make the scoreline more flattering than it was. A Chile/Mexico quarterfinal could be on the horizon...hmm.

The USMNT is taking it to Costa Rica up 4-0 late in the fixture. Was expecting a bit more from Los Ticos but one has to look at their meteoric rise up the rankings after the World Cup as a shock. Got to back it up.

Good effort for the Yanks. First win in Copa since 1995 snapping a 0-6 run in Copa. Plus it gives the US an overwhelming chance to advance if they don't lay an egg against Paraguay.

It was good to see early opportunities taken advantage of. Nothing tilts a game like early goals.

In the other Group A match Colombia withstood a late push from Paraguay to win, 2-1, and secure a spot in the quarterfinals.

Group B:

Brazil 7, Haiti 1 - Brazil on the right side of that scoreline for a change.

Ecuador 2, Peru 2 - Ecuador fought back from a 2-0 deficit, and is now in the driver's seat for a shot at the quarters with overmatched Haiti up next. Peru must navigate a tough but beatable Brazil.

Group C:

Venezuela 1, Uruguay 0 - With Suarez sitting (apparently no one from Uruguay told him he had been scratched, leading to a comical scene late in the game) and Cavani leaving his scoring boots in Paris, the boys from Venezuela pull off the upset (the first time they've won consecutive matches at a Copa ever), and coupled with the later result book their place in the quarters and eliminate Uruguay.

Mexico 2, Jamaica 0 - El Tri sleepwalks a bit through this one, but has more than enough class to beat the Reggae Boyz.

So, who had Mexico/Venezuela being the game for all the marbles in this group? Also, that Jamaica/Uruguay consolation match should be interesting.

The Euros kicked off today...

Group A:

France 2, Romania 1 - After Olivier Giroud opened the Euros account, Romania equalized shortly thereafter from the spot. West Ham's Dmitri Payet then stunned everyone with an 89th minute curler from 25 yards out to send the partisan crowd home happy.

Albania 0-1 Switzerland

Schar's goal in fifth minute provided the difference. However, when Albania's best player Lorik Cana was sent off at 36', it looked like the Swiss could dropped a few more goals on the newcomers. However, they failed to capitalized on the chances and nearly squandered the lead late when Gashi got behind the defense with only the keeper ahead of him but his shot was deflected away.

In other words, Albania battled despite losing Cana and the Swiss squandered a golden chance to add a few goals to the ledger.

Wales and Slovakia up next.

Group D:

Chile 2, Bolivia 1 - After a ridiculous Jhasmani Campos free kick tied it for Bolivia, this one seemed destined for a draw. But following a late injury delay which caused a ton of stoppage time to be added, Chile was awarded a PK for a handball in the box, and Arturo Vidal converted to save Chile's bacon.

Argentina 5, Panama 0 - A sloppy game full of fouls and cards. Argentina made a 7th-minute Nicolas Otamendi header stand up until the 61st minute when they subbed in somebody named Messi who proceeded to score three goals in 25 minutes and provided a hockey assist on the team's fifth. Look out for this kid!

For the most part Romania kept France (and some bad aim on the French) frustrated with their defense. Romania had a chance to score early in the fourth minute but Stancu's shot was right at Lloris.

Romania looks like they could finish third in their group and maybe advance to the knockouts.

Not sold on France yet. They looked shaky early and you can't do that against better competition later on.
