A day after UW goalie Anne-Renee" Desbiens won the 2017 Patty Kazmeier Trophy as NCAA D-1 women's hockey player of the year, #1-ranked Badgers (33-3-4) lost the D-1 national championship game to #2 Clarkson (32-4-5), 3-0. UW outshot Clarkson 41-20 for the game, but could not find the net.

The 3 goals allowed by UW marked only the 2nd time in 40 games this season in which UW allowed more than 2 goals. Freshman goaltender Nicci Cece allowed 4 goals in a loss to Minnesota-Duluth back in December.

Desbiens, who earlier this season, set an NCAA career shutout record (all divisions, men & women ) of 55 shutouts, had a goals-against percentage this season of .071, a .965 save %, a .886 win % and 17 shutouts. Her career #'s were: .090 goals-against %, .955 save % along with the a-fore-mentioned 55 shutouts.

As much as I love a D3 school winning it all in D1 hockey, I hoped it was not against the Badgers.

I never knew this! (A D3 school competing at D1) I notice they don't offer as many sports. I'd be curious what the attendance is like at their men's and women's hockey games.

There a few other schools which compete at various NCAA levels depending on the sport. Lake Superior St, Johns Hopkins U, RPI, to name a couple. Typically, it's a minor sport in which they play at a higher level i.e. Lacrosse, Hockey, Soccer.

Growing up in the U.P. I was aware of the D2 colleges playing D1 hockey- but never imagined D3 doing this. I do faintly remember an article around here written some years back should St. Norbert men's hockey move up to D1.

Want to say the attendance was an issue- but compare them to the lower tier WCHA teams and they aren't far off.

Anyways found my answer on a USCHO page (could only find page through googling question) about the women's hockey attendance.

BTW Wisconsin, Minnesota and University-Minnesota Duluth had outstanding fan support. Wisconsin even had their personal game high "record setting" attendance this past January.
