We go into the final week of the season with the pick 'em standings as such:

1. amped0808: 52-12 (.8125)
2. cettt: 51-13 (.7969)
3. thecrackerjack: 46-12 (.7931)
4. capcon: 49-15 (.7656)
T5. ash22themagnificent: 48-16 (.7500)
T5. wihsfootball: 48-16 (.7500)
7. importfromil: 47-17 (.7069)
8. bcushing: 46-18 (.7188)
9. card80fan: 43-21 (.6719)

Three of us (myself, capcon and wihsfootball) chalked up a perfect week to stay mathematically alive for the title; however, for all practical purposes it's down to a 2-person race between amped0808 and cettt for the title. (Unless things go crazy this week - in which case, who knows.) whfan202 did not get picks in again, so we bid adieu for this year. Feel free to drop in picks for Week 9 anyway, and remember - with 5-7 teams going to the playoffs, we'll have the postseason pick 'em title you can try to claim!

Week 9 Schedule
Lakeside Lutheran (2-2, 5-2) at Lake Mills (0-4, 3-5). The annual Slider Bowl, and Lakeside is in a "win to get in" game.
Columbus (4-0, 8-0) at Lodi (4-0, 8-0). This may or may not be important for something ... I can't recall.
Cambridge (2-2, 5-3) at Marshall (4-0, 5-3). Cambridge is in a "win to get in" game.
Luther Prep (1-3, 5-3) at Poynette (1-3, 5-3)
New Glarus/Monticello (3-1, 3-5) at Waterloo (3-1, 5-3)
Belleville (0-4, 1-7) at Wisconsin Heights (0-4, 0-8)

Week 9 Schedule
Lakeside Lutheran - One team has something to play for and the other has basketball season. Lakeside is a solid d5 team this year. I am not predicting a deep run for them but they are going to be a tough out for most d5 teams. Lakeside by 14.

Columbus - I took a look at how Lodi and Columbus did against the other North teams. Columbus scored more points and Lodi gave up less points (I am sure that doesn't surprise anyone). Columbus' margin of victory was actually 7 points better than Lodi. I took a look at the non-conference schedules. Both teams played teams from the Rock Valley North and the SCC. Both teams beat Rock Valley North teams by almost the same score (Lodi won by 28, Columbus by 27). The team Columbus beat also beat the team that Lodi beat by 10. In the SCC Columbus beat Wautoma (who will either finish as the champion or in 2nd place) and Lodi beat the Dells who is second to last place. What i am getting at is I think Columbus is a little more battle tested coming into this game.

As far as the game itself. Neither team's defense is going to give a whole lot up on the ground. Both teams will hit a few plays but both ground games are going to have to grind out the yards. The one weakness that I see is in Lodi's pass defense. They gave up 284 yards to a Lakeside team last week that isn't known as a pass happy offense. Columbus has two receivers that are tough match ups for most teams. If Lodi can not get pressure on Columbus' QB it could be the difference in the game. That said, the Lodi running back is a big kid with some speed. I don't know if Columbus has seen a running back like that yet this year. Neither team has been tested much in the second half of games. Both had their scares at halftime (Columbus against Prep and Lodi against Lakeside last week). Both flexed their muscles to start the second half and cruised to victories.

With all of that said this game is going to be a dog fight. But when 2 teams are as evenly matched as these two you have to look at every aspect. In talking with head coaches the one week the are not fans of is homecoming week. Lots of distractions and takes teams out of their normal routine. I am sure both teams have had reporters at practice this week. Guess who's homecoming it is this week? Lodi's.

This game will be won in the 4th quarter. I won't be too surprised if I pick up the paper Saturday morning and see either team as victorious. As far as my pick, in my best Lee Corso impersonation I am reaching under the desk and pulling out the Cardinal head and going with Columbus in an upset on the road by 4.

Marshall - Who would have thought starting conference play that Marshall could be undefeated? Hats off to them. Every chance Cambridge has had to turn the season around they have not done so. They have the feel of a team ready to turn in equipment next week. Marshall by 14

Luther Prep - They are the stronger team. They future is looking much brighter than is has in years past. Prep by 21.

New Glarus/Monticello - Some teams start out hot and fizzle, some teams start slow and get hot, and some teams never get it going. NGM is getting hot at the right time. NGM by 14

Belleville - Belleville by 28

We're light on predictions; I'm hoping everyone gets them in within the next 24 hours. In order of confidence:

Lakeside Lutheran at Lake Mills - kind of a familiar script for both teams. Moen will throw the ball a ton, put up a bunch of yards; DeNoyer runs the ball a ton and for a bunch of yards. L-Cats defense struggles, Lake Mills is buying sliders for their crosstown rivals. Warriors by 28.

Luther Prep at Poynette - Luther Prep should be prepping for a playoff spot; instead, they'll be taking out frustration on the Pumas. Phoenix by 21.

Cambridge at Marshall - Did anyone expect the hosts to be 4-0 and working on an undefeated season? Did anyone expect the visitors to be in a "do or die" game for the playoffs? One side needs a major effort; the other one will deliver it. Cardinals by 14.

New Glarus/Monticello at Waterloo - Toss-up game, but the visitors are on a roll right now. It would not surprise me if the Pirates win, but I think after the Marshall loss the hosts don't have a lot to play for until the playoffs ... and it shows here. Glarner Knights by 6.

Belleville at Wisconsin Heights - I really want to take the Vanguards here, I think this will be a close game - but sheer numbers may win out in the end. Wildcats by 5.

Columbus at Lodi - so much that could be said here, so many ways to pick this one. Get your tickets early, don't make time-sensitive plans for after the game; with any luck, this will top last year's game. On a neutral field it's a totally 50/50 game ... but it's not on a neutral field. However, I woke up with a feeling about this game; we'll see if I got the right vibe. In a late change, Columbus by 1.

Lakeside at lake mills- why is it called the slider bowl? Anyways Lakemills will come marching in doing their traditional warrior March to the field. Moen will put up some big numbers in his last game of his career. And lakeside will run all over Lakemills defense. Lakeside by 28

Prep at Poynette- both of these teams had really good years. Poynette really proved a lot of people wrong and won way more games then we thought and with a new head coach.prep had the best year since 06 or 07 whenever they made the playoffs last. And could of easily won the Capitol south if they were in it. I'm going with prep by 14

Cambridge at Marshall- not gonna lie the Capitol south is not good at football and no team will do anything in the playoffs. Marshall will be up for this game, they've overachieved this year but when your a big fish in a small pond and might I add a swallow pond. Your still gonna be in it to win it. I have a hard time believing Cambridge will lose this game and josh Owens and Caleb Martin go out missing the playoffs their senior year. Their oline is bad and Owens isn't the same, and their qb play is a roller coaster. It will be a close game and Cambridge can play in the trenchs with marshalls smaller line. I'm gonna go boldly and pick Cambridge by 7

New garlus/Monticello- at Waterloo- well new garlus doesn't play well in Waterloo ever. And last time they played there, it was a thriller come from behind win from loo and Wyatt gallitz's best game of his career. New garlus is on a roll and but their defense is terrible and loo's defense has been playing better. Their special teams not so much. Loo by 8

Belleville at heights- Not gonna lie the WIAA screwed heights this year and I don't know how waiting a year for 8man makes a difference. It's been a painful year and I feel so bad for the kids.Their gonna need some magic but who knows maybe something will go right for them. And by the way baseball can't come soon enough for them. Belleville by 7

Columbus at Lodi- game of the year in the conference and maybe the best in the state tomorrow night. I gotta see it to believe for Columbus to win. But they should be determined and lodi on the other hand finally plays a good team. I think Lodi will do what they always do and lose in the playoffs because you can't play smaller schools/ weaker talent. It hurts them so bad when it comes to a team that's equal to them. They want to bully those weaker smaller schools but they don't want to play a team that's their size. Lodi by 14(I hope Columbus pulls it off)

The first Friday in October is the final day for buying sliders. However, there is one standing tradition held each year before it?s all over.

??The Slider Bowl? began in the fall of 1995 when Lakeside Lutheran High School joined the Capitol Conference,? said Nate Burrow former Sports Editor of the Lake Mills Leader.

When Lake Mills High School and Lakeside play against each other in the fall, the losing team buys the other team 50 sliders. The burgers are cooked while the game is being played. The 2015 slider bowl will be held Friday.

What does Behling like about the burgers? ?Definitely the taste.? ?What I like about them is if they?re cooked the proper way you can really tastes the spices. You couldn?t duplicate it. It?s a different taste,? said Behling.

Lakeside Luther at Lake Mills- Denoyer will run wild and Moen won't be able to keep up in the air. Lakeside goes into the playoffs and look like a tough team to beat in D5. LL by 14

Columbus at Lodi- both teams are strong in defense but I think the Cards have an air attack as well as a rushing attack. Cards by 7 LETS GO COLUMBUS!!

Cambridge at Marshall- sure Marshall is undefeated in conference but I don't think they are as good as they think they are. Cambridge is in a win or or go home situation and they won't go out with a fight. Their o-line is weak but they'll pull some tricks out of their sleeves to win. Marshall over uses Mares all you need to do is stop him. Bluejays in a close one by 7.

Luther Prep at Poynette- it sucks to see Prep not make it to the playoffs but they had a great year and will continue to build as a team. Prep by 14.

New Glarus/Monticello at Waterloo- Binger is back and he's helping this team on both sides of the ball. Wonder what the Marshall game would of been like if he had played the whole game. Anyways Loo is good enough to get into playoffs but won't be making a run this year. NGM is looking better each week and win tonight by 10. Look for them to make a run in the playoffs.

Belleville at Wisconsin Heights- 8 man sounds great right about now for Heights. Belleville by 14.

Final standings will be up later today (unless someone wants to beat me to it), but it was a rough final week.

Lodi 37, Columbus 7 - the result, ... not a shock. The margin, ... I think that's a shock to everyone.
Lake Mills 55, Lakeside Lutheran 22 - The L-Cats get sliders and keep the Warriors out of the postseason.
Luther Prep 48, Poynette 14 - The Phoenix blow it open in the 2nd half to close the season 6-3.
Cambridge 35, Marshall 7 - The Bluejays grab a postseason berth and deny the Cardinals an undefeated conference record.
Waterloo 21, New Glarus/Monticello 0 - The Pirates technically share the C-South title with Marshall; makes the loss to the Cardinals probably more painful.
Belleville 40, Wisconsin Heights 14 - Wildcats close the season with a win; the Vanguards count down the days to when they can play 8-man.

In a week where we were a collective 27-27 and totally missed on Lake Mills crushing Lakeside Lutheran, wihsfootball turned in a 5-1 week to finish strong and end in a tie for 2nd; however it wasn't enough and amped0808 claims the 2015 Capitol Conference pick'em crown despite going only 3-3 on the week. Congrats! It was a great season from everyone, as the title came down to the final week and really any of the guys in 2-4 after week 8 had a shot to win it all.

See you all for the postseason pick'em!

Thanks for organizing this import.

Collin Moen from Lake Mills had a heck of a week. He is nominated for the Week 9 player of the week. Moen completed 12 of 16 passes for 194 yards and 2 touchdowns, ran for 139 yards and 4 scores, recorded 3 interceptions on defense, ran one of those interceptions back for a touchdown, recovered a fumble that led to an L-Cat score, and averaged 37.8 yards per punt. That is a heck of a season for most guys. Congrats to Collin.
