The silver lining:  The Badgers' WR position is arguably the team's position with the greatest depth, i.e. AJ Taylor (currently in a walking cast), Danny Davis, Kendick Pryor and true frosh Aron Cruikshank  all capable & waiting in the wings to step up & contribute.

It seems, over the years (since 1994) , that every time the Badgers have entered a season generally projected to be on the verge of something very big, personnel issues and/or injuries have reared their ugly head.

You're right about that.  To add insult to injury, the legal process usually takes quite some time so I wouldn't be surprised if he misses the whole 2018 season. If that holds true, that's two upperclassmen starters gone before the season even starts, both of whom were projected to have big seasons.  Now add in the fact that Gags could be gone the whole season, and suddenly we're facing some uphill challenges.  The thing that frustrates me most is that Cephus had been participating in camp and building hype the whole time after recovering from a serious injury.  It would have been less disheartening had he taken this LOA before camp started.  Very frustrating to be a Badger fan sometimes.

I think this is going to turn out to be a 'serious' case and not something like underage drinking. It happened in April and he has not 'copped' a plea? Makes me think it is something pretty serious. Cephus's lettter makes it sound like a sexual episode or the like.

The use of the word "consensual" makes me think this is going to be a sexual assault or a rape case.

What happens if it turns out that Chryst and/or Alvarez knew about this weeks/months ago but they allowed Cephus to continue to participate with the team?

I think the 'incident' in question was probably just recently reported by the possible defendant. Have to think with all the crap that has gone on with football players and the law in the past that neither Chryst or Alvarez would SIT on this. Possible, but very very unlikely.  Very possible it will be a 'she said - he said' situation or a spurned former girlfriend trying to get some kind of perverted revenge. This goes on a lot in the real world.

Apparently it's been investigated since April. So at some level it had to be known something was going on. The main problem with charges of this nature are as you said it becomes a "he said/she said" situation.

Much like with Urban, nothing will happen. Regardless of the parallels one could try to draw to the Columbus situation, once it became public knowledge or shall we say, the course of action the legal system decided to take became known, Cephus was "allowed" to remove himself from the team. Big difference between six years of problems and some new, developing situation.

They're standing by their player. My guess is he was given the option of being suspended while the situation played out, or making the statement he did and step away to get out ahead of things. Either way he wasn't going to be around if they proceeded with the case.

I don't think much will happen with Meyer, maybe he is suspended for 1-4 games.

Kind of becomes one of those, innocent until proven guilty, and if an incident occurs but charges are not filed and a trial is not set relatively quickly what is a coach or person of authority to do?

I think there is 0 chance Meyer get suspended.  It's all or nothing.  If you suspend him you admit guilt.  The media and other fan bases will eat him OSU alive over that.

He will either be cleared or fires.

Or he will have health problems related to the stress of the investigation and walk away.

I don't see this the OSU situation and this situation as anything similar
@2GuysFromWI

Harbaugh will have Urban Meyer retired from OSU by 2020.

I think at OSU there will be some sort of "in hindsight, we/he could have handled it differently, followed up more, etc." He'll probably get a game or 2 for not being forthcoming at B1G media day.

Obviously 2 different cases (OSU and UW) but somewhat similar in that once something occurs and no official legal charges have been filed, what is the responsibility of a coach or school?

The UW Student-Athlete Discipline Policy calls for a player to be removed from the team (competition and practice) when charged with or arrested for serious crimes:  https://uwbadgers.com/sports/2017/8/10/policies-student-athlete-discipline-policy.aspx?id=1336 , until a "Prompt Factual Inquiry" can be completed. So until he was charged or arrested, he was eligible to practice and compete under the school's discipline policy.

Cephus has been officially charged with 2nd degree sexual assault of an intoxicated victim and 3rd degree sexual assault.

Cephus, who's shown such promise, is more than likely gone for the season.  Just horrible for all parties involved.  If he is indeed guilty based on evidence, he should be punished accordingly.  If not, the young mans brightest season to be was just ruined and it will have an impact on the Badgers this year.  Sure the Badgers have depth, but his mere presence is needed against good defenses like UM, OSU, etc.  Being pessimistic in this sense, I think not having Cephus against a UM or OSU will cost us those games....

I'd be surprised if he plays for UW again.
