South Milwaukee at Greenfield - GF needs this win to keep their playoff hopes alive. Still don't understand their S/M loss. Going to need a great pre-game pep talk. Might be a time for boxcar willy to shine.

Whitnall at Milwaukee Lutheran - ML seems to be faltering down the stretch. They had solid stretches of strong play, but difficulty in sustaining it last Friday. Whitnall continues to impress, especially with Valcarcel in the line-up.

Cudahy at Shorewood/Messmer - YOLO...going with S/M here. Just going on a limb with the thinking that whatever matchup problems that caused GF to struggle to contain S/M's offense, will cause similar issues for cudahy too.

New Berlin West at Brown Deer - I got nuthin'

Wisconsin Lutheran at Greendale - Make no mistake...it's not about tie-breakers this week; it's about getting the win. Wisco seems to have an "on/off" approach to their weekly games, and by that schedule, this should be their "on" week. GD has struggled with Wisco's O for as long as I can remember. Even a down Wisco squad nearly knocked off the Panthers in the opening round of the playoffs last year.

West Allis Central at Pewaukee - see NBW @BD.

New Berlin Eisenhower at Pius XI -  See above.

Hartford at West Bend East - I am very tempted to pick East here...Keel always manages to appease the football gods in just the right way to at least leave him a tie in the NSC. If that happens here, I think it would be prima facie evidence of a conspiracy...only half-joking.

South Milwaukee at Greenfield - The Rockets seems to have found a little something and are doing well with it. It's enough in the Woody-East, but won't be once Level 1 hits. Greenfield controlled but didn't particularly crush a bad Cudahy team. Still don't know what's going on with their QB situation, and considering their playoff lives are essentially on the line, it almost seems a foregone conclusion they lay an egg.

Whitnall at Milwaukee Lutheran - Valcarcel left, Valcarcel right, Valcarcel center...and that's just defensively. Milwaukee Lutheran is gonna miss the playoffs, folks, in the East, not sure how that happened. Judging by the erraticness in their reported stats, it's just looks like they never found an identity offensively...which is strange since that's the one thing they've always had.

Cudahy at Shorewood/Messmer - I still think the S/M win over Greenfield was just one of those things that "only happens to Greenfield" and Cudahy should cruise here. Not sure where the Cudahy program goes from here though...at least S/M should benefit from playing all these young kids this year.

New Berlin West at Brown Deer - We still doing that first half points allowed thing? Yep, OK. Wonder if NBW has given any thought to resting some guys over the course of the next two weeks?

Wisconsin Lutheran at Greendale - Perhaps competitive WISCO shows up this week and plays a spoiler (in the first half) for Greendale. You'd hate to see it...but would you? How much you wanna bet these two meet in Level 1 again?

West Allis Central at Pewaukee - WAC scored against IKE. Sure it was with five seconds left against IKE's backups' backups, but by golly, they did it. Man, I just got really sad. Pewaukee seems to have found a bonafide running game the last few weeks. Depending on matchups, could it bring them a Level 1 win?

New Berlin Eisenhower at Pius XI - IKE played real nice last week (a lot nicer than previous years) and will probably do so again this week before inexplicably being back at near full strength for Week 9! Amazing how that all worked out, innit?

Game of Note

Hartford at West Bend East - I mean, we all know it's gonna happen. Serious warning signs after Hartford struggled to do much after getting an early lead against Bay. The Orioles were very fortunate the Blue Dukes' QB was out. WBE's been playing with a chip since surprise loss to Nicolet and is looking forward to the care package Homestead sends them.

South Milwaukee at Greenfield - One of these teams has improved every week, and one of these teams is Greenfield.  I hope the Rockets enjoy it while they can. I'd ask if the people in South Milwaukee realize their comparative strength of schedule gives them absolutely no chance against West, Greendale etc. if they sneak into the Woodland title game, but I already know the answer.

Whitnall at Milwaukee Lutheran - We should soon find out how a full-strength Whitnall compares to the best in the West, assuming they take care of business against the Red Lutherans here.

Cudahy at Shorewood/Messmer - It continues to amaze me that Cudahy can have a state championship-level powerlifting team but so few beasts on the offensive and defensive lines. Strength needs to be their identity if they want to break out of this slump.

New Berlin West at Brown Deer - Ouch.

Wisconsin Lutheran at Greendale - I really enjoyed the playoff games between these teams about a decade ago. Both programs have dropped off a bit but Wisco's decline has been much more precipitous. Greendale is doing enough to win and they will continue to do so here.

West Allis Central at Pewaukee - Ouch, Part II.

New Berlin Eisenhower at Pius XI - Pius is down literally 1000 kids from the Melkamania YouTube Channel era.  They "only" have 800 kids roaming the halls of that huge school today.  That's about the same as Eisenhower, though, so the resources are there. They just need to find some administrative / coaching continuity and patience to build something.  Meanwhile, I'm sure everyone at Eisenhower's getting a little slap-happy about the impending return of their starters.

Game of Note

Hartford at West Bend East - Homestead always gets help when they need it.

Congrats to Greendale on a great season. The coronation happens a week from Thursday. Then a day off to let the lesser teams in the conference play followed by 1 seed Saturday!

South Milwaukee at Greenfield: The Woodland East has produced too many weird results to make feel not very confident about this pick here.

Whitnall at Milwaukee Lutheran: Well except for Whitnall here.

Cudahy at Shorewood/Messmer: This could be an interesting game for a bit.

New Berlin West at Brown Deer: West rolls in dominating fashion.

Wisconsin Lutheran at Greendale: Wisco is just waiting for the crossover next week.

West Allis Central at Pewaukee: Pirates should get some offensive fireworks going here.

New Berlin Eisenhower at Pius XI: Same goes for IKE.

South Milwaukee at Greenfield - Because of the talent on the field I am forced to take Greenfield. Joe Koch isn’t walking through that door. This is an opportunity for GF to merely reach the .500 mark in the Woody East before their crossover game. It’s hard to believe the Hawks are even in this position with the schedule they have. GF did what they were supposed to last week in beating an extremely limited Cudahy team that won’t be confused with the Carey Venee teams of the glory days.

Whitnall
at Milwaukee Lutheran - Whitnall gets a T-shirt.

Cudahy
at Shorewood/Messmer - Cudahy plays better then last week.

New Berlin West
at Brown Deer - NBW gets to rest some dudes before playoffs.

Wisconsin Lutheran at Greendale - Greendale is an easy pick against a sub .500 Wisconsin Lutheran squad which doesn’t come close to resembling what they once were. They are barely recognizable outside of the name and scheme. They used to handle good teams and destroy mediocre teams. We know Stoltz’s record against Kirk DeNoyer. One column was empty. Kirk is currently enjoying life as the Executive Director at Lake Mills Lakeside Lutheran. Life on Rock Lake is pretty nice. It’s the right time for Greendale to have Wisco in the Woodland. This would have been real ugly for many years. There’s not really anything to say about this specific game. Wisco was only 4-6 last year and lost almost all of their production to graduation. Somehow, Greendale almost lost to them in Level 1 last year. That won’t be the case tonight.

Greendale has been excited about some of their youth teams in recent years. Their success hasn’t been matched at the Varsity level for whatever reasons. They went into some years regarded as the best team in the Woodland by their fans but failed to win the division and had some early exits from the playoffs. I think that’s why some of the Greendale faithful suddenly seem giddy about possibly being part of a 3 way tie and reading up on tiebreakers. Expectations have been adjusted by their fan base. Perspective and context is needed though. This would be a backdoor title with obvious unusual circumstances. We could argue on tiebreakers but at this point, Panther nation seems comfortable accepting the crown. A title is a title, but I thought this program thought bigger than conference titles. An o.t. escape against a middling Pewaukee squad and a no show second half against IKE doesn’t feel like championship stuff.

There seems to be some hope for Greendale at the moment. Their new qb has played well. They are saying a few rosaries that CMH slides to D-4. They won’t have to face anybody in D-2 this time around from the Southern Lakes or Classic 8, both are conferences where big boy football is played. They did lead IKE at the half earlier this year. West De Pere (who gave CMH a big scare in last year’s final) appears to be a solid D-2 enrollment this year. The path in D-3 isn’t as daunting as it could be. At some point, they probably have to play somebody of note. Although, there aren’t any untouchables out there. In the meantime, the school with zero gold balls to their name should enjoy their 3 way tie for first place. Keep in mind, that the conference has to declare a winner. Tiebreakers vary and are generally debated. Expectations have slipped in the village. But hang the banner, be sure to pay the printer to add NBW and NBE to the canvas. And remember that the season doesn’t end next week. You will have to eventually play somebody that matters. Greendale has been gutted in some of those games and found ways to lose some others.

West Allis Central at Pewaukee - End of a tough year for WAC

New Berlin Eisenhower
at Pius XI - Not a lot of deliberation in picking IKE this week. The last month of the Woodland for many teams has felt like an exhibition season or lopsided games at the college level between teams that shouldn’t be playing one another. That’s probably telling that realignment won’t cure several problems for the Woodland.

Gabe Olson's calendar goes straight from March 31st to April 2nd. No one fools Gabe Olson. In a nice story for IKE last week, Gabe Olson got the start at qb and played well. Olson was beat out by Seifert at qb a couple of years ago but was good enough to start on defense and be ready to contribute on offense. It’s nice to see kids stick with their team even when things don’t go their way.

Like many games in the conference this week and every week, there’s little to dive into. Kern will do his best to keep the score from getting completely out of hand. I don’t envy that task. How vanilla can it get and how early is too early to pull starters? This game doesn’t serve either school well.

In other news, IKE is celebrating 50 years of the doors being open. They are going to start a Hall of Fame for the Sports programs. This will differ a bit from their Wall of Fame where if you accumulated some varsity letters you made the cut. Matt Pierce’s older brothers (Eric and Greg) will be locks for this along with Dan Dobner who carried his offense to Camp Randall in the late 80’s.
