Shorewood/Messmer at Brown Deer - Shorewood/Messmer seems to be taking baby steps and maybe that's enough here. It's not as if either have been competitive, but I feel as if the Falcons have been doing better relative to expectation. I may come to regret this pick admittedly...lol.

Milwaukee Lutheran at Cudahy - I get the sense this could be full of fireworks. Overall though, Milwaukee Lutheran is far more potent offensively. I feel bad for Cudahy's QB, they just haven't been able to build much around him. They had a nice game last week, particularly running the football, but that was much a product of opponent than anything more indicative of a good ground attack.

Whitnall at Greenfield - It just doesn't seem like anyone in the East is in Whitnall's league...and defense has never been the Hawks forte, so expect another 250+ from Valcarcel here. Not sure what's going with Greenfield's QB at this point, but it's turning into a lost season....and maybe for the Hawks again as well.

Pius XI at South Milwaukee - Should I be nervous for the Rockets here? -10 yards of offense against Whitnall. What is going on over there? No one was expecting greatness, but these results are a bit staggering. Pius has athleticism and that apparently gives the Rockets fits, so who knows. Galewski should have his team in good enough shape to win this though. If not...

West Allis Central at Greendale - WAC put up some numbers through the air last week...which was nice...yep, that's all I got. Greendale suddenly has a track to at least a share of the Woodland-West title and that should keep them motivated...not that they'll need much motivation on Friday.

Pewaukee at New Berlin West - West got the win though it was more of a nail-biter than the paddling some were expecting with mass suspensions over at IKE. Pewaukee has had an odd season, but finally got a big offensive performance from someone last week. I think West rides the momentum from the IKE win to a surprisingly easy W here.

New Berlin Eisenhower at Wisconsin Lutheran - WISCO's performing a lot better than I think just about everyone expected this year. With IKE short-handed they suddenly have a chance here. IKE still slowed NBW's run game heavily though, and I expect that to continue here. IKE's still in good position for the playoffs and maybe a short run with kids expected back before then. Still, if you're Kern, when the time comes, how do you play those kids who failed so miserably as program leaders over those who didn't screw up?

Game of Note

Menomonee Falls at Waukesha West - Yeah, no one thought either of these teams would be where they are at the minute. Another good test for Falls, who keeps passing with flying colors. West has a real good QB, but unlike when they had the older Blount their lack of a complimentary running game is killing their chances...and for a team with an OL guru as head coach...that's unexpected.

Shorewood/Messmer at Brown Deer - Tough call, tight game. Perhaps not the prettiest of games, mind you...

Milwaukee Lutheran at Cudahy - I think ML will just have too many weapons for the Packers to contain. 1 TD game either way.

Whitnall at Greenfield - Whitnall is taking every chance they've got to assert their dominance, and they'll continue to do so here.

Pius XI at South Milwaukee - I do believe this will be a tight game...keep in mind, tight here is within 2 TD's.

West Allis Central at Greendale - Wasn't at the game again; watched it on TV later, and aside from their first Touchdown, they looked rough and out of sync. Hoping they're able to work out the kinks this week.

Pewaukee at New Berlin West - Pewaukee gave the panthers all they could handle.

New Berlin Eisenhower at Wisconsin Lutheran - Really, this strikes me as a toss-up game, and I might change my pick later. I'm giving the benefit of the doubt to Ike, since they'll go into the week knowing full well what they have to work with and game-plan and practice perhaps more effectively.

This isn't exactly insider info, just an educated guess from knowing a few people and players still with the program... but there's two points I'd answer that specific question with.

(1) SM is on its fourth offensive scheme (and third defense) in four years. All that change is hard on a program that wasn't really a world-beater to begin with. Ever since the old principal ran Knoche out of town, they've slowly trended away from a solid set of career coach/teacher types to more of a revolving door. That's tough on the kids no matter how good the coaches may or may not be.

(2) Last time Coach G was in charge, they still had the benefit of the new weight room and a highly-motivated powerlifting program. Neither of those things get as much play over there anymore.

Week Five Matchups

Shorewood/Messmer at Brown Deer
Two weeks ago I said Brown Deer would run away with this one. Now I’m not so sure with what appears to be a reload of eligible players Messwood has gained. Brown Deer has been the better team all season but a different either result wouldn’t shock me.

Milwaukee Lutheran
at Cudahy

Whitnall at
Greenfield
Greenfield’s QB is back and I think he can be a major Player in this game assuming Greenfield can slow down the 30+ carry a game Valcarcel show.

Pius XI at South Milwaukee

West Allis Central at Greendale
Your 2019 Woodland West Champs.

Pewaukee at New Berlin West
NBW is bigger and more physical than some of the teams Pewaukee has faced recently. Good game but NBW will control the clock and LOS.

New Berlin Eisenhower at Wisconsin Lutheran
Some weird stuff going on over at IKE. They still win here but it won’t be as much of a (spanking) as I initially thought.

Game of Note

Menomonee Falls at Waukesha West
Mix toughness with elite athletes and this is what you get. Kudos to this program over at Falls. This game can still go either way.

Week Five Matchups

Friday, 9/20

Shorewood/Messmer at Brown Deer - It's hard to watch what's happening with Zack Baun's alma mater, but it's basically the same thing happening to the rest of the entire Woodland East. I honestly get a little tired of tossing the same old coin here in these games week after week.

Milwaukee Lutheran at Cudahy - A few years back, Cudahy had a really talented young QB who started as a freshman and then wound up playing in the state title game as a receiver for another school. Kudos to Barbian and his family for sticking it out in purple and gold.

Whitnall at Greenfield - It doesn't look like Whitnall will be challenged in the East this year. Greenfield's the best hope left to somehow change that conversation, but I don't think they have the talent or organization to do it.

Pius XI at South Milwaukee - Was it really less than ten years ago that these two schools played a playoff classic decided by a last-second, 53-yard field goal? This week looks nothing like that contest on either side.

West Allis Central at Greendale - Tough one for WAC. Even the fiercely-loyal Greendale cheer dads might leave this one before halftime.

Pewaukee at New Berlin West - This has all the makings of a classic, 80s-style ground-and-pound defensive struggle.  A Pewaukee win would really muddle the conference race so a vote for West here feels like a vote for sanity.

New Berlin Eisenhower at Wisconsin Lutheran - This whole situation is really going to be a test for Eisenhower's culture. You don't just shake off scandals like that, even when the suspensions somehow conveniently wrap up before the playoffs hit. I know it's not the smart choice but I'm going to pick Wisco here.

Game of Note

Menomonee Falls at Waukesha West - Falls is a on a roll and West is still struggling to find themselves. A C8 victory here is far from out of the question, but it just feels like the momentum up on Appleton Ave. is working in the maroon-and-silver's favor.

All 9 of us who've posted on the Woodland "Prediction" board embrace your difficulty in managing this board. Here's a tip! Instead of posting a prediction thread where everyone just looks at box scores, how about you create some better topics? Woodland game/team diagnosis? What went wrong? Play calling? Situational analysis? Again, I know its tough to manage 9 posters, but why don't you consider expanding the topics? Travis hasn't figured it out yet, so, maybe you can make a play and build some knowledge and interest into all boards. What do you say?

Dear Mr Lanous,
I can help with my analysis of the Greendale vs Pewaukee game but will do so from a positive standpoint. Looking at the last drive by Greendale, it was utter genius to throw the ball  to the middle of the field on 4th and long to set up the goal to go. This after peppering the Pewaukee secondary with out routes earlier in the series. Then the TD play with a little trickery. I have to admit, the called back TD in OT for Pewaukee was a  pretty sweet play call. Both defenses played hard and took away certain aspects of the other teams offense. An example would be Pewaukee limiting a portion of Greendale’s run game. ‘Twas quite the fun game to attend. Might I suggest attending the next Greendale game vs the Bulldogs from West Allis Central.  Well, there is my analysis from last week. Hope is is a help to you

have a great day!

Shorewood/Messmer at Brown Deer - This one will be exciting.

Milwaukee Lutheran at Cudahy - Cudahy just isn't that good.

Whitnall at Greenfield - I am forced to pick Greenfield because of the talent. I think water meets it’s level some day. Joe Koch isn’t walking through that door. Even Shane Covington isn’t walking through that door. Greenfield beat a punchless Brown Deer team last week. They are fortunate that Baun is out of eligibility there. The quest for this regime to get over a .500 record continues. It didn’t happen at WAC. It could happen here. After tonight, Greenfield has a free ride until playoffs. The schedule is friendly and accommodating, soft as Charmin.

Robb Widuch will win the X’s and O’s battle tonight. They have a plan and an identity. Kids will be in the right place. They might not be the most diverse team, but have a workhorse back who plays defense as well. Widuch was a linebacker at Linebacker U. (Whitewater) and looks like he could still play. Greenfield is fortunate that the game isn’t decided by an arm wrestling challenge by the coaches at the 50 yard line.

Pius XI at South Milwaukee - Joe Koch isn't walking through this door either.

West Allis Central at Greendale - Greendale has very smooth sailing the rest of the regular season to put it mildly. Their remaining opponents won’t offer much resistance at all. An inter squad team scrimmage against the JV’s might be closer. Greendale is in a strong position for the division title as a result of some things which have happened elsewhere and not by their own merit. The question between now and playoffs will be how much Greendale can improve. The win over Pewaukee wasn’t a thing of beauty, but it will help their playoff seed. They lost a good lineman for the year and don’t have the potent O anymore to beat good teams. You can run on Greendale these days.

Pewaukee at New Berlin West - Pewaukee would be in the driver's seat now for the outright Woody title if they didn't hand the game to Greendale. West will have a let down this week.

New Berlin Eisenhower
at Wisconsin Lutheran - I will take IKE. To pick a very depleted IKE squad against Wisco would have been unheard of back in the day, but things have turned upside down for Wisco. It was gradual at first and then it accelerated. Wisco really struggled last year (4-6) and they lost a lot to graduation. Picking games in the Woodland West has become more difficult in recent days.

IKE has taken some hits in this forum lately, not from the masses, but a few. I’m not going to talk about the kids who aren’t playing this week or call out posters by name. But I hope those that are talking tough have at least a few Varsity letters and somewhat broad shoulders. Remember, blanket statements are bad because every single kid on the roster wasn’t guilty of doing something. There are plenty of schools that have had similar things happen. It often goes unreported or is swept under a rug. IKE handed out significant punishments and didn’t wait to enforce it until after the game against their rival. It’s been well documented that IKE players have been very active in helping out in the community. This isn’t for show and I expect that to continue. It’s safe to say that things like this won’t happen at IKE in the future. I also believe that kids at other schools will take note of what happened at IKE and make sure that they either eliminate some traditions they have had or are very selective about what they do going forward.

The fact is that IKE is in a tough spot all of a sudden. They were a couple of inches from pulling off a win last week. Tonight isn’t a guarantee now and Pewaukee is still on the schedule. IKE will make the playoffs and a lot of firepower will return. They might have some rust, but they will have a lot of healthy and fresh players returning. IKE might not have a share of the conference in 2019, but everyone involved knows who the best team is and has been for a few years. West had to be happy to win last week and they played the IKE team that was on the field that night. Their kids were probably thrilled to win and should be. They know it would have meant more to beat an IKE team operating at full capacity. If Greendale or Pewaukee wins or shares the division this year they will appreciate it. This isn’t the way that most people would want to win the title though.

It’s also a fact that IKE has dominated the Woodland in recent years. People know the lopsided scores and that it’s been a few years since IKE has lost a conference game. IKE has been the only Woodland team winning meaningful non conference games and beating quality playoff teams. The conference has been a punchline for many for a long time. IKE has had some wins that have gained and saved some credibility for at least the West division. I think the reason some feel comfortable blasting IKE is because their teams have come up short against IKE and are mostly irrelevant outside of the conference.

In terms of football, the weekly picks have a new dynamic all of a sudden. Tonight might not be pretty, but IKE will show up. Jack Osielski carried the mail last week as his touches increased. As President Roosevelt said: "We have nothing to fear but fear itself. And Jack Osielski."

Game of Note

Menomonee Falls at Waukesha West - This is a down year for WW and Falls appears to be a contender.

Shorewood/Messmer at Brown Deer: I wouldn't be surprised if this went the other way. On paper BD appears to be the favorite and has shown some life from time to time in Woodland play. Shorewood is starting to come around on its own but can they put together a solid game to get the W? That may be too much to ask.

Milwaukee Lutheran at Cudahy: Now this could be a very good game. Cudahy can ill afford another loss in Woodland play considering the week nine crossover against the West and Lutheran while probably not going to catch Whitnall, is shaping up to be the number two team in the East.

Whitnall at Greenfield: Another game, another big day for Varacel against rival Greenfield.

Pius XI at South Milwaukee: That offensive output by SM was disturbing last week against Whitnall. They need to be careful here against a Pius team that is better than initially thought so far this year.

West Allis Central at Greendale: Now Greendale sits in the driver's seat in the West despite another meh offensive effort last week. Granted, it was against a Pewaukee team that is starting to show signs of cohesion but it seems the offense for the Panthers has gotten in sync here.

Pewaukee at New Berlin West: West aspires to be the #2 team in the West but they best be careful here against Pewaukee team that pushed Greendale to OT last week.

New Berlin Eisenhower at Wisconsin Lutheran: Despite all the issues surrounding the program, West needed OT to upend IKE. It'll be a sharp learning curve for all the new faces that are replacing the ones who made poor decisions as leaders of the team but I think they get just enough to win here.
