Playing in Camp Randall is always a treat, running on Saturday afternoon at a jam packed Verterans Stadium in La Crosse can be goosebump inducing...but for my money, nothing beats this weekend as far as WIAA state tournament series is concerned. Gonna be a blast!

I've only been to one Championship Saturday for wrestling (2005), but it was quite the experience.

I know you watch far too many hoops games to be up to speed on the who's who in wrestling but IMO that's the best thing about this weekend. You don't need to know any of the kids or the schools they wrestle for to enjoy the competition, the venue, or the agony and joy that is produced every 6 minutes.

That's also the only one I've attended...I still get chills rewatching the ending of the D2 275 Championship Match (the semifinals were pretty intense as well).

The D1 140 final was on the mat in front of where I was. Tom Reamer's reversal and takedown of Anthony Azarian for the 1-point win with under 10 seconds left is etched in my memory....as is Azarian refusing to come out for the medal ceremony and then coming out, getting his medal and throwing it into the crowd and being resoundly booed by 15,000 fans. Crazy.

The one Championship Saturday I attended brought about the same experience. If I didn't attend the basketball state tourney every year, I'd be at wrestling. It is a different kind of intensity.

I remember that...it was nuts in the Kohl Center. He was also a Waterford wrestler....so kind of a prelude for what kind of reaction might await this weekend at the Kohl Center.

I just stumbled upon this story about Azarian's late father passing away in 2000 -  https://journaltimes.com/fallen-hero-the-late-tony-azarian-could-never-say-no/article_669c99c1-6ea0-57f3-b5cf-8a2f788bbe8b.html I now get why he got so emotional after that loss to Reamer.

I've thought about that too. A redux of the crowd booing Waterford wrestler who transferred from another Racine County school (Park in Azarian's case, IIRC).

Tragically, this post is relevant again as Anthony Azarian passed away in a construction accident in Milwaukee on Monday -  https://journaltimes.com/business/local/second-azarian-killed-in-construction-accident-monday/article_3be8072f-7048-51f1-97f6-b855ae3fddcd.html#utm_source=journaltimes.com&utm_campaign=%2Femail-updates%2Fbreaking&utm_medium=WhatCounts&utm_content=3E1E212672B0223DE29CFB126FD95708522786F9

I got my previous post wrong, it wasn't Anthony's father who passed away in 2000, it was his uncle. This story gets even more tragic as his fiancee gave birth to their son last Saturday.

My thoughts and condolences go out to his family and friends.
