I hope I'm wrong, but I think the Canes are gonna dominate the Badgers with their defense this game.  I also think Miami's speed is gonna get the edge on multiple occasions and as a result will score more than 21 points.  Canes are 7-0 when scoring 21 or more points this season.

I was thinking perhaps Bucky's defense could keep Miami's less-than-dynamic offense in check and UW could control tempo and time of possession with their running game and come out with a low-scoring, close victory.  However, UW's injuries concern me, especially the loss of inside linebacker Ryan Connelly ...

How will the Canes handle the cold weather? They've been rather soft in cold weather conditions in the past...

Whoever wins this game is likely to be the team that cares more about being there...as is often the case with these mid-tier bowls.

Wouldn't surprise me to see either side just show up and roll over.

Valid point, Dan.

UW's bowl prep over the years has won the Badgers a few of the games which you describe.  However, the Badgers, IMO, had problems all season long "getting up" for games.  Not sure why that would change now.

Hoping I'm wrong ...

Quite the Transformation

"The Badgers look vastly different now compared to their meeting with Miami last December at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. Of the 22 who started against the Hurricanes, 10 are available for Round Two, including two on defense (senior strong safety D'Cota Dixon and senior inside linebacker T.J. Edwards) and eight on offense (Taylor, senior right guard Beau Benzschawel, sophomore center Tyler Biadasz, sophomore wide receiver Danny Davis, senior left guard Michael Deiter, junior left tackle Jon Dietzen, junior tight end Kyle Penniston and junior wide receiver A.J. Taylor). Five of the absentee starters — senior inside linebacker Ryan Connelly, junior left tackle David Edwards, junior quarterback Alex Hornibrook, senior tight end Zander Neuville and senior nose tackle Olive Sagapolu — have at least 14 career starts. Of the 56 names listed on the official Orange Bowl play sheet as having seen action for the Badgers last December, 34 are available for duty."

Haven't been too many bowl games in recent memory that Bucky hasn't been the more prepared and more energized team from the opening kick. I do worry this might be the one that Wisconsin comes out flat.

Miami also does have the "revenge" motivator after losing in their own house last year.

Even so, I can't pick against Wisconsin in this game. JT and the offensive line get it done in a low scoring game. 20-14.
Pain heals. Chicks dig scars. Glory, lasts forever.

And that side was Miami as Wisconsin forced five turnovers, Jonathan Taylor rolled up 200+ yards and coasted to a 35-3 victory in what had to be one of the quickest CFB games of the year.

Miami with just 169 yards of offense and 62 of those came on an early Malik Rosier run that set up Miami's only points.

Wisconsin (8-5) 35
Miami (FL) (7-6) 3
Final Score

This could've been a massive blowout by UW had the Badgers not left 20 points on the field in the 1st half in the form of 2 missed chip shot field goals, an interception on the Miami 5-yd line on a feeble attempt by Jack Coan to throw the ball out of bounds and a TD pass called back because of a chop-block penalty.  Otherwise, you're looking at a 34-3 halftime score.

However, Bucky continued his dominance on both sides of the ball in the second half, scoring 21 points and shutting out Miami the rest of the way.

First Downs ... W-20 - M-6
Rushing Yds ... W-333 - M-121
Passing Yds ... W-73 - M-48
Total Yards ... W-406 - M-169
3rd Down Conv ... W-6/13 - M-3/4
Turnovers ... W-1 - M-5
Time of Possession ... W-39:47 - M-20:13

Noteworthy:
* 3rd bowl win by Wisconsin over Miami in the past 10 seasons (2009, 2017, 2018)
* UW's 5 consecutive bowl wins is a Big 10 record.
* Over the past 4 seasons, UW's senior class went 42-12 overall, 27-8 in the Big 10 and 4-0 in bowl games.
* Jonathan Taylor's 4171 yards rushing over 2 consecutive seasons is the most by an FBS sophomore and the 3rd most in FBS history.  UW's Melvin Gordon holds the record with 4196 rushing yards in 2013-14.  Iowa St's Troy Davis is 2nd with 4195 yards in 1995-96.
* In 27 career games, Jonathan Taylor has rushed for over 100 yards 22 times, 150 yards or more 12 times and has gone over 200 yards in a game 8 times.
* UW inside linebacker TJ Edwards' interception vs Miami  was the 10th of his career which is the most by a linebacker in UW history.  Edwards' 10 career INT's are also the most of any active FBS linebacker.

Amazing way to end the year.

The battle has to be between Coan/Mertz next year.  Having Coan as an actual running threat really opens the offense, and you'd figure Coan can improve his pocket presence when the play breaks down.  That td called back to little Benz was a great play that Horni could have NEVER made (let alone the read options/bootleg), but that penalty was garbage.

JT ran all over one of the "best" defenses in the nation.  Seriously, how bad is the ACC? UW and Minny stomped those two teams.

JL will have an embarrassment of riches at secondary depth, and quite frankly, I thought having Burrell out there was a smart move as he played really well over Dixon.  We should see the DL improve immensely, especially once Rand gets back to healthy.  Rand, Williams, Loud plus a couple of young guys.  That is the key to the defensive improvement next season and that will allow new linebackers to produce.

Badgers will surely miss Edwards/Connelly/AVG/Sags on defense.  It's a shame AVG was hurt most of this season and  didn't get more years at UW, he is FAST and athletic.  He would've made so many more plays over the years.

The most encouraging thing (to me) is that all those seniors who produced for years, are actually very replaceable, especially the offensive linemen.  In fact, if Biadasz goes pro, we will miss him more than Benz/Deiter/Edwards.

I think next year few years will tell us a lot about Paul Chryst.  He will finally have all his guys for his system, and I think the fluidity in the offense will come back back (much like it did vs Miami) in the play calling. Anyone appreciate those screen plays to as much as I did?  Lastly, while people will criticize Coan, I don't think PC puts him in favorable situations to pass.  No passing on 1st down?  It seems like UW, all season, passed when they needed to, not when they wanted to.

Are they replaceable? If Biadasz goes pro, they have to replace 4/5 starters. That isn't an easy task.

As for Coan, unless he improves drastically, I don't think he is starting for UW next year.

Biadasz not going pro, but they will have to replace 4/5 starters as Jon Dietzen announced his retirement from football due to injuries.

The reps that CVL got this year will be important for next year. I guess there's a lot of people in the program that think CVL is ready to take on the LT role Full Time next year anyway.
