Arrowhead at Marquette - Simply based on sheer numbers and tradition, you know these teams will have some quality, but there's not really a ton in the way of big names returning for either side. Marquette has its top receivers back, but struggled mightily without the now-graduated Horning a year ago. Holtz carried Arrowhead's offense a year ago and is also gone. Will Arrowhead ride heavy on the sophomore RB? Seems strange to call these two teams a mystery, but it's kind of what they are. I'll take Arrowhead, as they're likely to have more defense in this one.

Friday, 8/17

Germantown at Menomonee Falls - Neither team was up to the level of their tradition last year, and that may continue for Germantown. Falls though, sees bigger things behind top-ranked senior RB Julius Davis.

Wauwatosa West at Brookfield East - Tosa West may be a pretty good team this year, but likely will still struggle for wins in the GMC. B'East is established as a program at this point, and despite the loss of a couple D1 players should continue to roll in the GMC outside of their crosstown rivals.

West Allis Hale at Sussex Hamilton - Hale may be better, but there still won't be many opportunities for victory this year. Hamilton is prepped for bigger things, but must avoid the injury bug that plagued them last year.

Brookfield Central at Wauwatosa East - Cupboard is certainly far from bare at BC, and while not completely bare at Tosa East, it's also much smaller. Remember last year when Tosa East had an early lead in this game? Guessing that won't happen again.

Games of Note

Franklin at Waterford - Waiting for Franklin to have a down year? You'll be waiting for a long time by the looks of it. SLC teams have given the Sabers a bit of trouble over the years, and the Wolverines are no slouches themselves. Franklin always finds a way in the end though.

Grafton at West Bend West - WBW did grab two wins last year, but I struggle to see them building on that. Grafton, on the other hand, may be building on something.

Greendale at Lake Geneva Badger - I expect Greendale to be quite good this year, however, I still think this type of game, this type of opponent, are a bridge too far for them...especially on the road. Can they prove me wrong? Perhaps, LGB does have quite a bit to replace, but the Badgers are nothing if not consistent from year-to-year. The Panthers haven't been recently.

Arrowhead at Marquette - MUHS has not been a regular fast starter and typically uses the non-con schedule to sort out who's capable of what. In other words, the result here is probably less important to them than the process. That said, the second year in their 3-4 defense should produce better results on that side of the ball.  There's a wealth of returning skills at WR, TE and RB, and the line is well-coached again which will benefit whichever QB winds up taking snaps. This is the game of the week and Arrowhead might well win it, but I really like what Marquette is capable of this year.

Friday, 8/17

Germantown at Menomonee Falls - Davis right, Davis left, Davis up the middle. It's a great recipe for success but it's also not exactly a guessing game for Germantown's D.  Reminds me a lot of when Racine Park featured John Clay.  This game will be won or lost in the trenches, but at the end of the day, a D-I talent in the backfield can be pretty tough to stop for even the most disciplined defense.  Just ask Homestead's 2005 squad.

Wauwatosa West at Brookfield East - The arrow is still pointed upward at Tosa West and they will understand a little better now just what they need to bring to compete in the GMC.  Unfortunately for them, East has become one of the league's upper-tier programs.  Upsets happen in Week One because nobody knows quite what to expect, and while East is definitely the safe pick here I have to wonder whether the Trojans might turn a few heads in this one.

West Allis Hale at Sussex Hamilton - I still can't over the cognitive dissonance of watching Hamilton actually come out in a spread and throw the ball last year. There still isn't anything complicated about what they do, but it's good to see they've diversified, and with their facilities you have to think they're another up-and-comer.  Hale, meanwhile, is probably the best team in the Woodland East this year. Oh, wait... crap.

Brookfield Central at Wauwatosa East - Tosa East could co-op with Pius XI and the scoreline of this game would look absolutely no different. Fair-play watchdogs will be counting how many BC starters are on the field come the second-half kickoff.  Tosa East really should be joining Hale in the Woodland... what's that you say?  Not again?

Games of Note

Franklin at Waterford - Franklin will be back to their usual SEC-champion selves this year. They'll be even better in two or three years (just watch). Waterford is actually better suited to challenge them than any conference opponent. This would be a fun one to watch.

Grafton at West Bend West - Honestly no idea here, but I never pick a West Bend team on principle because of that goofy two-schools-in-one-building arrangement.

Greendale at Lake Geneva Badger - The Woodland typically produces one team capable of winning a few playoff games, and this year my money's on Greendale. Last year they got beat one too many times by the option pass against LGB-- in a tight game, that was the difference. If their safeties play with more discipline they win this one.

Arrowhead at Marquette: MUHS experienced an up and down year last season. Arrowhead kinda was a non-factor in the Classic Eight title chase last season. At this point I think the Warhawks have the talent advantage here.

Friday, 8/17

Germantown at Menomonee Falls: Both teams IMHO underperformed last season. However Falls could make some noise behind Davis. Not sure what G-Town brings to the table in week one.

Wauwatosa West at Brookfield East: Could be interesting for a while before B'East pulls away. West has some decent talent but they have to find a way to beat a team (G-Town, Falls, Hamilton) if they want a shot at a playoff bid this year.

West Allis Hale at Sussex Hamilton: Last year was brutal for the alma mater. Barely competitive (Even losing to TE by 21) and I am not sure how better they are this year.

Brookfield Central at Wauwatosa East: BC came agonizingly close to bringing home the Gold Ball last season. They will be the favorite in the GMC but how they navigate D2 in the SE will be a question.

Final

It still doesn't compute seeing a very pedestrian Arrowhead football team.

Marquette's running game looked particularly sharp as Daeleon Brown-Williams found all kinds of lanes inside and outside. Marquette then used starting linebacker Riley Nowakowski at RB as a hammer in the second-half to wear down the Warhawk defense. Marquette's passing game, which struggled last year when the now-graduated Josh Horning was out, looked a bit more cohesive today...certainly helps having Thompson and Ubert back, plus a big TE target in Novotny. Defensively I thought MUHS looke much more comfortable in year 2 of the 3-4. Nowakowski is particularly impressive from his LB spot.

Looking at Arrowhead, at this point I'm struggling to see where they get four wins in the Classic 8...but it's early.
