Girls basketball in the Wisconsin Valley Conference just became a lot more balanced & competitive with the return of a couple previously successful, veteran central Wisconsin coaches.

At SPASH, Kraig Terpstra inherits a potential Wisconsin Valley Conference championship and D-1 Top-10 roster. SPASH loses only one senior from last season & returns its top 6 scorers from 2016-17, including former WVC scoring champ (2015-16) Maggie Negaard who played in only 7 games in 2016-17 while recovering from a serious off-season knee injury.

Terpstra led the SPASH girls to a state D-1 runner-up finish in 2001.

Wausau West's new girls head basketball coach, Tom Weinkauf, needs no introduction. He built a boys basketball dynasty (3 state championships) at Marathon in the 1970's and '80's before taking over the reins of the Wausau Newman girls hoops program, turning it into a perennial state title contender (3 state championships) in D-4 and D-5, before retiring a couple seasons ago.

Like Terpstra at SPASH, Weinkauf inherits a ton of experience from last season's Warrior's team. 4 of the top 5 scorers return including the WVC's leading scorer from last season, Maddie Shires, who averaged 19.1 ppg as a sophomore. With Weinkauf undoubtedly installing his full-court pressure defense, to go along with an already high-powered offense, Wausau West will immediately contend for a D-1 Top-10 state ranking and a WVC championship.

DC Everest's & Marshfield's recent reign atop the WVC will be immediately challenged by SPASH & Wausau West & their new, veteran coaches.
