re: Bonduel vs. Iola

I wasn't there...maybe someone following this sub forum was. My dad has missed maybe 2 Bonduel football games over the past 30 years or more so this report came from him.

The score reflected the way the game went. Bonduel was the much better team and their lines controlled Iola from the very start. By the end of the 3rd Iola pretty much gave up. I'll admit I was a bit surprised by the outcome...not that Bonduel won but that Bonduel won by the margin they did. I thought they had a shot at a win but not like this.

Bonduel has two starters who were concussed against Iola. A lineman and their starting QB. I'm not sure of their status heading into next week or if it would even matter against Amherst but it's something to be aware of moving forward. Maybe it's a "good" thing that it happened now so they can be back in time for the post season...who knows.

Under Westrich they have typically been a program that has played their best ball towards the end of the year but this year the Bears have gelled much quicker than in the past.....primarily because of their line play. Throw in two really good backs along with a shifty third option and the holes are there.

Other tidbits from my dad....he felt that Iola came in a bit over confident and thought that this was a year when they might have the horses to compete with Amherst. Maybe they do and everyone has underestimated how good Bonduel is...I don't know. He is of the opinion that the Iola fans and players very likely could've only been looking at Amherst on their schedule and this game blindsided them. Even if that was the case the way the game was played illustrated that Bonduel was better than people expected.

Until the top half of the conference starts playing one another it's tough getting a read on how strong a team is because over the past few years the entire CWC-8 (not just Amherst and Shiocton, but everyone) has been pretty stout in their respective non-conference games. This current era is as good as we've seen in this conference even when you remove the programs who won state titles....one can make a very strong argument that the CWC-8 is from top to bottom the best small school conference in the state right now.

Anyway....thought I'd share what was passed along to me regarding that game.
