Over the next few days I will be making my predictions for how the seedings will shape up for conference team's regionals in softball, baseball, and soccer, and possibly a few other random thoughts. As always, others are more than welcome to share their feedback and input on seedings as well as other thoughs on the upcoming tournaments.

Softball Division 4 ? 5/12
1.         Manitowoc Lutheran (9-7, 7-5 in Olympian)
2.         Sevastopol (6-7, 5-7 in Packerland)
3.         Stockbridge (1-7)
4.         Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah (0-6, 0-5 in Central Lakeshore)
5.         Green Bay NEW Lutheran (0-15, 0-12 in Packerland)

Manty Lu and Sevastopol could provide a competitive regional final, but the winner would face a likely buzz saw in sectional semis with Oakfield.

Softball Division 3 ? 5/12
1.         Algoma (14-3, 10-1 in Packerland)
2.         Mishicot (7-6, 5-6 in Olympian)
3.         Brillion (5-10, 4-9 in Olympian)
4.         Reedsville (6-11, 3-10 in Olympian)
5.         Saint Mary Central (5-9, 3-9 in Packerland)
6.         Gibraltar/Washington Island (2-10, 2-9 in Packerland)

Algoma and Gibraltar are pretty set in stone, but the four Olympian teams are pretty jumbled. Reedville and Brillion especially is a toss-up ? split conference series, Brillion has better conference record, but Reedville has nice non-conference win over 12-6 Howards Grove. Both teams were scheduled to play in Brillion Tournament today, so that may give more clarification.

I see Algoma getting through this regional pretty easily, and if they do they will get a third home game in the sectional semifinal game. Probable match ups for that game are (10-4, 8-4 in Flyway) Lomira or (6-8, 6-5 in Flyway) Laconia; the two teams split the conference series.

Softball Division 2 ? 5/12
1.         Southern Door (15-1, 9-1 in Packerland)
2.         Roncalli (9-6, 6-6 in Olympian)
3.         Two Rivers (9-5, 8-3 in Eastern Wisconsin)
4.         Luxemburg-Casco (5-7, 4-7 in Bay)
5.         Sturgeon Bay (6-9, 5-5 in Packerland)
6.         Kewaunee (6-10, 5-7 in Packerland)
7.         Denmark (1-14, 0-10 in Bay)

This regional is easily the most intriguing of the three softball regionals with the mixture of teams from different conferences with similar records. And even the seemingly clear favorite and bottom seed have tie ins to the middle of the pack ? Southern Door?s only loss was to Kewaunee, while Denmark?s only win was over Kewaunee and lost to LC twice by just one run.

Since that loss to Kewaunee, Southern Door has really put together a strong string of games that has featured 5 wins over teams with 10+ wins, including giving previously unbeaten Adams-Friendship its first loss and beating D1 ranked Bay Port. Despite its record, LC may be able to give Southern Door the biggest challenge with its experience and ability to stay within striking distance during its games with the top Bay teams.

The winner of this regional will most likely face a Bay Conference team next, quite possibly defending sectional champ Oconto Falls and sophomore sensation McKenna Larsen in sectional semifinals, and with a win possibly yet another Bay Conference team in undefeated New London in sectional finals.

Baseball Division 4 - 5/13
1.         Lake Country Lutheran (10-5, 7-4 in Midwest Classic North)
2.         Sevastopol (9-7, 7-5 in Packerland)
3.         Oakfield (7-5, 5-4 in Trailways North)
4.         Manitowoc Lutheran (7-7, 4-6 in Olympian)
5.         Living Word Lutheran (5-11, 3-8 in Midwest Classic North)
6.         Heritage Christian (1-14, 1-11 in Midwest Classic South)
7.         Green Bay N.E.W. Lutheran (1-12, 0-10 in Packerland)

This regional has the potential for some competitive games in the regional semis and regional finals, but also the potential for some long travel times. For the winner of the regional, the regional they would match up with in sectional semifinals doesn?t have any juggernauts, so a sectional final appearance is a possibility.

5.         Mishicot (1-14, 1-10 in Olympian)

A very straight forward regional as far as seeding goes, but similar to Division 4, no real dominant team. The winner of the regional would also not face a huge challenge in the first sectional game.

Baseball Division 2 ? 5/13
1.         Sturgeon Bay (13-2, 11-0 in Packerland)
2.         Luxemburg-Casco (9-9, 5-6 in Bay)
3.         Denmark (8-8, 4-7 in Bay)
4.         Roncalli (10-5, 7-5 in Olymian)
5.         Kewaunee (8-8, 6-5 in Packerland)
6.         Southern Door (6-8, 5-6 in Packerland)

Similar to softball, this is easily the regional with the most interesting potential match ups. Sturgeon Bay gets the number one seed because of their record, but they lost to both Bay Conference teams in nonconference play, which raises a little concern. If the Clippers are able to get through the regional, they would get to avoid a potential Bay Conference team in sectional semifinals, with 13-4 Fox Valley Lutheran most likely being the top team in Regional C.

Girls Soccer Division 3 ? 5/18
1.         St. Mary Central
2.         Kewaunee
3.         Newman Catholic
4.         Assumption
5.         Sturgeon Bay
6.         N.E.W. Lutheran
7.         Sevastopol/ Gibraltar

St. Mary Central and Sevastopol/Gibraltar are locks at the one and seven seeds, respectively, but seeds two through six are still completely up in the air.

At this point I will project Kewaunee getting the two seed. Assumption, Sturgeon Bay, N.E.W. Lutheran, and the Storm all have all come close to ?not losing? to St. Mary, but Kewaunee has been able to one of only two teams not to lose to the Zephyrs. Also, before next Wednesday, Kewaunee has three very winnable games (Denmark, Roncalli, and Two Rivers), meaning their win total could be as much as 16 by the seeding meeting (the next highest potential total of the remaining teams would be N.E.W. with 13). Those two factors give Kewaunee the two seed in my eyes, but a slip up before Wednesday would be costly.

Newman Catholic gets the three seed on the basis of only having one loss so far, and while they don?t have a plethora of common opponents with the Packerland teams, there is something to be said for being tied for first in a conference with all Division 1 and 2 schools. However, Newman still has some work to do before the seeding meetings, with a non-conference game versus 7-3-3 Regis Monday and then Tuesday versus co-conference leader Rhinelander.

Assumption had been running right along undefeated until last weekend, when they lost to St. Mary Central 1-2 and 3-15 Denmark 0-1. Regardless, they are still 9-2-4, with one of those ties coming to Newman Catholic and another to 10-2-3 Aquinas (ranked fifth in the most recent coaches poll), and I?m sure last year?s run to the state title game will be in the back of the minds of the coaches. They will play at the Washburn Invite tomorrow ? with three winnable games on paper they can only hurt themselves at this point.

I truthfully think next Monday?s game at Sturgeon Bay between the Clippers and N.E.W. Lutheran will decide which team is seeded higher. Right now I have Sturgeon Bay seeded higher because they won the first match up, as well as missing many key players in their early loss to Roncalli. However, N.E.W. Lutheran does have a key 2-1 win over non-conference Fox Valley Lutheran, who Sturgeon Bay lost to 0-2.

Another senerio: with the teams currently seeded 3 through 6 being so jumbled, I could see the coaches taking travel into account and pairing Newman Catholic and Assumption together and Sturgeon Bay and N.E.W. Lutheran together. To me, Newman Catholic/Assumption would be the 3/6 matchup, rewarding these teams by not potentially having to face St. Mary Central until sectional semifinals.

I like the predictions, but as I am looking at the teams and the divisions they play against, I could actually see Newman Catholic being elevated to the #2 position and Kewaunee going #3, not a huge difference but would make a tougher game for Kewaunee going against the 6th seed, which could actually go either way with Sturgeon Bay or NEW Lutheran...

Like you said earlier, this will be a tough one to seed....and will come down to the last game before the seedings, so everyone still needs to play hard....

Thinking about it as an N.E.W. fan, I would greatly prefer Wausau Newman to get the 2 seed and Kewaunee get the three seed, assuming now the N.E.W. will most likely get the 6 seed (much nicer travel time [8d] ). If Newman is able to beat Rhinelander tonight the two seed would be greatly justified, after winning the Great Northern Conference.

I see where Kewaunne won last night and Newman Catholic went down after a hard fought battle. Newman Catholis did have the tougher opponent.

Tomorrow night brings an interesting matchup with Kewaunee traveling to NEW Lutheran, so I might travel up and see that one, at least most of it, and then work my way back down to catch the SMC/Valders matchup. I am hoping by the time I leave the NEW game I will have an idea of the outcome.

I believe they are having the conference awards meetings tonight, will be interesting to hear the results from that, but as always, our coach will not let anyone know, until after the season, and I can understand that. The seedings meeting has to be soon, but not sure when, maybe you know when it is....but if it was like last year, it was right before the last match of the season.

I am pretty sure that the coaches in the regional were just sumbitting their seedings electronically (due to coordinator either yesterday or today), and that brackets come out sometime tomorrow, or at the latest Friday.

I can actually see them placing Assumption as the #2 seed because they have been rank in the top ten this year several times, so that might be the reasoning they would be placed in front of Newman Catholic and Kewaunee. But we should know soon. I am positive of the #1 going to SMC and #7 going to Sevastopol.
So it could go like this:

#2 - Assumption vs #7 Sevastopol

#3 - Kewaunee vs #6 NEW Lutheran

#4 - Newman Catholic vs #5 Sturgeon Bay

With #1 SMC waiting to play the winner of Newman Catholic/Sturgeon Bay

and with winner of Assumption/Sevastopol playing the winner of Kewaunee/NEW Lutheran.

and this is in no way saying that New Lutheran or Sturgeon Bay do not deserve higher seeds, because they are both good quality teams.

Honestly, as an N.E.W. Lutheran fan, that regional would be the best case senerio. Keeps St. Mary Central and Sturgeon Bay, who have both had N.E.W.'s number on the other side of the regional, and get to face Kewaunee, who N.E.W. has been successful against (so far), and nice travel for team and fans (me). As far as Assumption and Newman goes, I think Assumption being ranked was a little bit a result of last year and not losing until May, but that Denmark loss has me a little leery (but maybe just a let down game?). This all would be so much easier had either Assumption or Newman just won their match up intead of tying...
