I am going to tap into my "vast" volleyball knowledge and give you two players to watch at the State tournament.

Simone Lee of Menomonie Falls, in D1, a spiker that played on the US National Team this year.

Mariah Whalen of Wausau Newman, "transferred" from Wausau West this year, another impressive spiker playing D4.

Are you insinuating that she didn't come up through the local parochial school feeder system? Because I was under the impression that these small urban private D-1 prospects were strictly products of the local feeder programs. []

Whalen was phenomenal! I was impressed with her athleticism. However, I was sort of disappointed with her serve/receive. I felt this was her only major weak point.

Mariah did not "transfer" from West. She is a freshman and came to Newman as a freshman instead of going to West.

My mistake, when I officiated a basketball game last year, she was wearing a Wausau West jersey and I must have gotten the wrong impression.

Bad time to mention the Wausau East transfer (Katelyn something) who also played? Couple nice additions to a very weak freshman class.

Even if you are not a volleyball fan, take the time and watch the rebroadcast of Menomonie Falls in the championship. This girl is unbelievable, going to Penn State on a full ride.

Is there some alarm in Newman-land that goes off anytime someone references a transfer to Newman?

Well, at times, West (and East) has been a feeder school for Newman.

I do not post much anymore as both of my kids are out of the system however I knew the same 2 or 3 whiners would say something about her at Newman.

I could write 2 or 3 paragraphs and get the pot stirred more but I will let the haters hate.[]

There's a much bigger advantage to a D5 school getting an athletic transfer than a D1.

Other bigger schools are much more equipped to compete against a team (public or private) bolstered by transfers...in the smaller divisions, there are very few programs that can over any length of time.

I wonder of these people who rip private schools for "transfers" get as catty when an athlete leaves to go to a public school. Just off the top of my head, I can think of two guys in the past few years who were 1st Team All Valley in football who left the Newman system. I'm sure that grinds your gears just as much, right guys?

I think it is great that they challenged themselves against the highest level of competition possible.
